Heavier Than Air - The Ferens Art Gallery
15 November 2003 to 11 January 2004

The Ferens Art Gallery is delighted to host a new exhibition Heavier Than Air, by Glasgow artist Tom McKendrick.

Heavier Than Air is a dramatic installation piece that mixes kinetic sculpture, painting, light and sound to strong atmospheric effect. It focuses on the design and purpose of aircraft in times of war and peace and explores emotions associated with flight.

Over the years McKendrick has drawn much inspiration from the industrial past of his native Clydebank. In this show he depicts dismantled aircraft, including those used in World Wars I and II.

A series of abstract paintings explore and celebrate the design of aircraft while highlighting the fragility of the outer casings of lightweight metal, battered and bruised through use.

Further drawings dwell on the terrible and claustrophobic role of the ball turret gunner, curled foetal-like beneath the main body of the plane.

The sculptures also illustrate an imaginative perspective on the ingenuity of engineering and design which has enabled flight.
Complex and robust engines are exposed and embellished in large-scale ceramic structures, synchronised in motion by small hidden motors.

The portryal of the immense power encapsulated in the mechanics of these aircraft is furthered by the inclusion of a squadron of tiny, vulnerable, latex airmen whose feet are strapped directly onto the engines.

Ask Dorothy Advice Column, - My life is ruined.
Dear Dorothy, writing to you is a last resort. I am so depressed I could kill myself. Last year I spent all summer with my dad converting our garage into a practice room for our band. We had weeks of great weather, barbecues - me, my girlfriend and my buddies all shared this great close bond. It was the happiest time of my life...or so I thought. Everything started to go wrong, Read more...

Aircraft and Airshows - The Yorkshire Airshow - Elvington 2003 By Tony
What a pleasure to be here for 2 days (24th - 25th August)! We were fully entertained with a diverse mix of aircraft. Both days of the flying program opened with the superb Red Arrows. Unfortunately, on the first day they had to abort their display for safety reasons when three light aircraft strayed in to the six mile display zone. Without doubt there must be an investigation into this misdemeanour and culprits brought to book. Read more...

Music Reviews - still life and Sidewinder play the Welly Club
Late Nite Line-up 13th November By Cilla.
A fabulous live band. Honestly, I feel so privileged to have seen these guys right now. They're tight. They're all connected by an invisible thread. They kind of flow into each other - I guess its what you might call synergie. I've got to say they seem to have it all - even pyrotechnics! Read more...

Reviews, Books - "Cradle Song" by Robert Edric
By Nick Quantrill
Being a bit of sucker for crime fiction, and more pertinently, hard-boiled private investigator stories, I picked up this book purely on the basis it fulfilled the above criteria and is set in Hull.
Upon further investigation it turns out this is the first part of a trilogy set on the mean streets of Hull by Booker Prize nominated Robert Edric. Read more...
