Freebase - 29th January 04 Adelphi, Hull / Kazbah, Scarborough - 28th January 04
by Cilla
The other day I received an email from Simon Fox, a drummer in a band from the Midlands.
He'd seen thisisUll.com
on line, read some of the reviews and strangely enough, his band, Freebase will be playing the Adelphi in Hull on 28th January.
So I did a bit of research to get a preview of what to expect, what kind of music they play and who they are.
Freebase is a 5 piece band; Mark (Main Vocal Attack!), Simon (Drums), 'Fozzy' (Bass), 'Big Paul' (guitar) and Liam 'Lord of Leathered' (Guitarist).
The band was first formed in August 1995 - the line-up has changed but their music remains the same, hardcore, heavy and aggressive.
The band has released several albums. Their latest, My Life. My Rules (Diehard / Hard-Boiled Records) was released last year and was well received in Europe and the U.S.
They've recently been on tour in Ireland Scotland and countries as far afield as Malta!
They're a hard-working, hard touring band and are established "Road Hogs" who've played alongside bands such as The Exploited, G.B.H., The Business, Pitchshifter and Saxon.
They've been described as "Ungovernable... Unstoppable in their desire to reach the next challenge".
Here's an excerpt from their band biog:
.... Their love of touring, beer, (and more beer) hard-hitting hardcore and "In-your-face" live shows has earned Freebase a reputation that precedes them.
However, once Freebase are unleashed upon the listening audience the real reason they have gained such notoriety across the hardcore scenes in the UK, Europe and far beyond can be seen.
Also, they are busy writing for their next album:
.... The new material promises to be just as uncompromising in its attitude as its predecessors.
This new material along with Freebase's positive, unchanging outlook added with extra intensity, integrity and intelligence promises to take this band very much forward and up to the next level of musicianship in the UKHC / Metal scene.
I asked Simon to tell me a bit about the band and what they felt about gigging. He had this to say: We find touring quite demanding but its always well worth it when you go to a gig and meet people who are up for a good night.
Above all Freebase are up for enjoying ourselves. We are not stuck up rock stars, or snobby. If you come to any Freebase Gig come and talk to us, and more importantly buy us a beer (hint). If you want to have good fun at a gig then It's all about getting involved.
Our website has lots of Mp3s that are free for downloading, so you can hear for yourself what Freebase sound like.
Download the files and pass them on to your friends if you want. See you in the pit.

Since January the BBC Telling Lives team has been helping local people from the Humber region tell their real-life stories and turn them into short films that are broadcast by the BBC.
Some are deeply moving, some funny, some quirky - and each one is unique to the storyteller - they are 'stories no one else can tell'.
