Coming Up Exhibitions
Two new exhibitions at the Ferens Art Gallery bring a watery and fishy feel to the gallery.

Drift Works: Will Maclean - 24th April - 1 August 2004
John Trigg: Paintings and Sculptures 97 04 - 24 April - 13 June 2004

Will Maclean and John Trigg are both artists who have been inspired by a lifelong fascination with the sea.

They each have seafaring ancestors and before pursuing a career as an artist, Maclean went to sea at the age of 15 to work as a midshipman and ring net fisherman

Maclean is one of the most important Scottish artists of his generation and Driftworks explores his interest in the mythologies of the sea.
It also reveals his long standing fascination with museums and they way they present objects.

It incorporates wall-mounted and box constructions, mixed media sculptures and a new video projection Cod Requiem which explores the decline of the fishing industry.

The Times described Driftworks as extraordinarily moving and the Scotsman said Maclean is a rare and special artist.
Trigg currently lives and works in Penzance, Cornwall. This exhibition brings together paintings and sculptures created over the last eight years.

Originally Trigg trained as a carpenter and the skills he learnt are evident in his work. Trigg is inspired by his local environment and also draws on personal memories and experiences.
The exhibition includes a 16 foot long sculpture called Dreamboat and a vast figure, Body of Long Memory, which will be exhibited in the Ferens Centre Court.

Christine Brady, Assistant Keeper of Art (Exhibitions), said: Driftworks has only been exhibited in Dundee, London and New York and this is a rare opportunity to see work by such a highly acclaimed artist.
John Trigg last exhibited at the Ferens in the early 90s and the show proved extremely popular with visitors. We are delighted to have the opportunity to bring his most recent work to Hull.
