Coming Up Exhibitions
Exhibition From 17 April 27 June - W. Barns-Graham: Painting as Celebration
Ferens Art Gallery, Queen Victoria Square, Hull

Last showing in England of a major survey of abstract work by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham.

A key figure since the 1940s within the group of artists associated with St Ives, her death this year at the age of 91 closes a rich chapter in British art.

A close friend and colleague of sculptor Barbara Hepworth, Barns-Graham drew inspiration from Hepworthıs devotion to art. Both women struggled in the male-dominated St Ives community of modern, and largely abstract artists.
While Hepworth achieved success more easily, Barns-Grahamıs reputation suffering unjustifiably.

In more recent years this neglect has given way to recognition of Barns-Grahamıs achievements. Recently she was awarded a CBE, three honorary doctorates and in 1999 a major retrospective exhibition was staged at the Tate St Ives.
This exhibition drew a large and enthusiastic response from both public and media alike.

Barns-Graham continued to produce paintings and prints until the end of her life with freshness and excitement. Visitors to previous exhibitions of her work have been amazed by the vitality of the work and assumed it to be that of a much younger artist.
This exhibition explores the nature of W. Barns-Grahamıs work over the last 10-15 years. A few key works from earlier in her career are also included as reference points to recurring themes and preoccupations. Various media is included but the exhibition focuses mainly on vibrant works on paper.

Christine Brady Assistant Keeper of Art (Exhibitions), said: Barns-Grahamıs death is a loss to the art world and this exhibition of her joyful work is a must-see
Opening hours Monday to Saturday 10am 5pm / Sunday 1.30pm 4.30pm
Last Admissions 15 mins before closing
