Stephen Regan the Exiled King of Hull, August 2005

Just recently I went off to spend a couple of days in the great city of fearing and loathing
(no, not Leeds, silly!).I mean London, where people are still
coming to terms with the evil terror strikes and everyone is still so very nervous and jumpy.
I was in the capital for a couple of dull PR meetings connected with my day job, plus a few
hook-ups with old drinking chums too.
I did think of cancelling the trip ... for about two seconds. I did consider that I might be killed by a demented Islamist with a bomb strapped to his arse but I quickly dismissed that as statistically highly unlikely. Likewise the possibility of having my head blown off by a police marksman was in my thoughts briefly. Again, I quickly realised that isn't very likely, though I will take the precaution of not carrying a rucksack on this latest trip.
Terrorism, eh? Hey-ho, well life sure is a bitch sometimes but life goes on, friendship and workaday
business must and will continue in our country's great cities.
You trust the people travelling on the bus or Tube with you because you have to. There is no other way of living.
The British have always been a strong people. We are a mongrel race, new blood enters our mix all the time, and we stronger for that. We aren't easily defeated. And while plenty of timid people in Hull and East Yorkshire (mainly spineless Liberal Democrats and some misguided Christians) still moan on endlessly about Iraq and how wicked the West is, I say that the West represents Good in this struggle between Good and Evil now under way on our planet.
What we in the West have to do now is stand firm and we need the support of good, pious Muslims everywhere to expose the brainwashed, evil Islamists who commit mass murder in a most twisted cause. There is much evidence that ordinary Muslims are as sickened as everyone else by the violence of the terrorism that's ricocheting around the world.
The going certainly has got tough for our country, but I confidently predict that the struggle will eventually be won by the West. The West will triumph because on our side is the most powerfully attractive force known to humankind - the force of freedom.
All around the world the oppressed are now hearing its irresistible call.
US President George W Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair, far from being bogeymen and political pariahs as portrayed by the unpatriotic British Left and cowards within the BBC, are actually heroes of the struggle for freedom and are determined to spread it to all those people who have known nothing but the tyrant's yoke for decade after damnable decade.
It doesn't look like Bush and Blair are winning at the moment but their eventual triumph is certain. And that is a good thing for the whole world.

I wonder how Humberside police chief David Westwood is frittering away his time as he waits and waits to learn his fate after being suspended from duty pending the result of an inquiry.
I rather hope that he might use this enforced rest period to take up a hobby which he once used to practise with some enthusiasm.
