Coffee Shop Reviews
Virtually Perfect
Cybercentre Café, 17 Paragon Street Hull
by Jason Neil Karlson.
From the ashes of the defunct Sydney Scarborough building rises Hull's one and only cyber cafe.

It's decked out with huge dark blue comfy sofas, massive ultraviolet waveform artwork adorning the walls and Avril Lavinge's Sk8er Boi playing out through the sound system.

Liberal amounts of chrome and anything modern and sleek seem to be the in thing here. The cyber cafe may offer an experience with a virtual twist, but the reality is that the place is remarkable.

The staff are helpful and friendly to the customers and right away make you feel at home.
They seem genuinely concerned about helping you and making sure you enjoy your meal, which I did.
For the sum of £4 I was presented with delicious hot rolled chicken Tortillas with spicy BBQ sauce, a generous helping of fresh salad and an ice-cold glass of Fresh Orange.

If that hasn't whetted your appetite then the café offers a wide range of cold sandwiches and drinks including Coffee, Tea and cold beverages like Smoothies - very welcome with the promise of summer just around the corner.
It's the attention to small detail that really make the Cybercentre stand out from the crowd, the cute ketchup squirt in the shape of an @ sign of the side of the plate made me smile.

Students shouldn't worry about delving deeper still into the depths of their increasing overdrafts as a 10% Student discount with a valid student card is offered, and before any one moans about how privileged students are another 10% discount after five visits is the reward for the general public.
The one part of the café that makes it unique is the cyber part. In days gone past cyber cafes haven't fared so well in the city, but this one appears to be thriving in its city centre location.

On the second floor, really a raised platform above the counter is a lengthy row of flat screen computers occupied by web surfers bathed in ultraviolet light.

For a fee anyone off the streets can come in and try their hand at the internet from web browsing to e-mail and if you don't know your mouse from your monitor then the café jumps into action again with it's training courses down in the basement.

Be sure to file the cyber café in your favourites list

Articles - "We do it our way" By Starpaw
The reason I love Hull, yes love, the reason why I can remember facts like it was the second most bombed city during the war, or citing famous people who lived or live here is because it's so innately, well, Hull. Plus if we get a brand spanking new bus station, where are all the 20p scrounging townies going to go? Poor buggers ;) Read more...

Music Reviews - 22nd August Adelphi - The Schoolgirls & Emma Rugg
The bank holiday weekend at the Adelphi club is kick started by new band, The School girls. Two guys who unfortunately sound like twenty. To quote Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" they're the kind of second rate punk group you'd pay a months wages not to see. Read more...

Articles Part Four - Diaries From Detox, day 7,8
Brilliant. No longer am I just alcohol dependent but I have also turned into a narcotics addict. The Librium has been reduced fairly substantially and its beginning to hurt. Next thing you know I'll be sniffing glue with 14 year olds. I was actually waiting by the medicine cabinet tonight for my drugs. If Santa had dropped down the chimney I'd have mugged him for Librium.

Articles Part Two - 1973: Super tug to defend fishing fleet
By John Boldock
Our job was to steam up to the stern (rear) of the likely victim and try to protect the trawler by forcing the gunboat to veer around and force him past the bows (front bit) of the trawler.

Misic Reviews - The best way to spend a Sunday!
Hull's Adelphi 1st February 04 By Mike Burton.
Well, we arrived late and caught the Bob Monkhouse dedicated last song from Killer of Saints, best described as "Nirvana get heavy!" Then it was the turn of prepubescent punkers, Mad Crowd Disease. We didn't actually get to see much of the band due to flailing of arms and thrashing of limbs, but the set was promising none the less. Stained with Offspring style guitars, occasionally breaking into .. Read more...

Band Reviews - Badness and All Mod Cons at the
Piper Club - 29th Dec 03 by Jane Foster
I went to see Hull's favourite Madness cover band - Badness- at the Piper club on Newland Ave. They were supported by All Mod Cons, who are a tribute to The Jam. It was a fantastic night.. I'm old enough to remember Madness quite well, I confess..although at the time I wasn't particularly into them, they were definitely a band for the lads. Read more...

Music Reviews - Drypool Hulls Best Band By Rob Dolman
In my opinion, the best band in Hull at the minute is Drypool. I have seen all the rest -Diablo, Turismo, The Raywells, The favours etc. etc. Yawn, Yawn. I mean these bands tout themselves as original. C'mon, some cover bands are more original than this lot. Drypool are tight, musically creative and no two songs sound alike. I really recommend them..
