What a year for Yo-Yo
By Andrew Coe
|
Well what a year 2004 has been for Yo-Yo, Hulls longest running Indie night which was
began nearly ten years ago way back in 1995 at The Welly Club.
The night which boasts DJ Priya and ex Shed Seven front man Rick Witter as resident
DJ's has enjoyed one of it's best years with every Saturday night being full to capacity.
|
|
|
Punters with a love for indie artists such as The Libertines, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand
and The Ordinary Boys have flocked to the night.
Pete Doherty (Libertines singer) who was voted number one in the NME magazines 2004
Cool List this year asked to play at the night providing what many have described as
the most important gigs in the city in recent years!
His band The Babyshambles took to the Yo-Yo stage in August this year.
|
Also gracing the stage has been a wealth of local talent such as The Paddingtons, Turismo and
Salako.
The Yo-Yo Livelab night which has run once a month has been a great success,
giving great exposure to local bands to a mixed audience of students and locals.
Hull City arts council described the night as The best live platform in the
city for local bands to play.
The popular brand Yo-Yo is now beginning to spread its wings to other cities with
spin off night Yo-Yo Lincoln celebrated it's three year birthday recently.
|
|
|
DJ Priya has also found time to continue her massively popular Friday nights at
The Piper Club, as well choosing and introducing her Yo-Yo single of the week every
Sunday on Jim Coulson's Sunday Session on Viking FM.
|
|
The Yo-Yo night has also created some of the most imaginative advertising ideas this year
with flyers appearing on a variety of materials such as denim and Perspex!
Yo-Yo organisers Priya and Andrew were also featured in the new book celebrating
The 20th anniversary of The Adelphi Club in Hull.
There are quotes from both them through out the book as well as contributions from
a wealth of musicians and artists who have graced the Adelphi stage over the last twenty years.
|
|
So what next for the Yo-Yo night? On Saturday 4th December Fonda 500 are playing.
Hull lo-fi heroes Fonda 500 who's track Simon's Alphabetical Beard from their new 15
track EP entitled ABCDELP recently featured on the NME chart on MTV2.
Andrew from Yo-Yo said Fonda have been and still are my favourite Hull band, which
I think is quite well documented. In fact I've always said they are easily one of
the finest bands in the UK.
|
|
|
Also The Yo-Yo New Years Eve party will be back, this year taking place at
The Piper Club on Friday December the 31st. Tickets are now on sale priced £6 at
The Piper Club and Beasleys Clothing, Hull.
Tickets are limited to only 450 and are expected to sell out.
Andrew said The New Year bash will be a great party to end a great years for us.
People need to move fast for tickets, we sold twenty at the beginning
of November which is amazing!
