1st March 05 - Grapevine is Moving to The Attic
By Michelle Dee
|
On Tuesday, after witnessing another packed night at The Sesh and with the upcoming changes in mind,
I decided to find out what it was you the club-goers wanted from your Grapevine night.
These are the main areas you highlighted:
To have local bands played a lot more, to push underground music to the fore at the new venue.
|
|
To create a much more of a continuation of The Sesh feeling for Grapevine.
To promote the night more heavily, particularly aiming towards the first year University students.
To have a DJ that plays at least some of the records that club-goers request.
To encourage the feeling of goodwill between DJ and clubber. Instead of creating barriers, build bridges.
To have a wider selection of, and, cheaper drinks, more special offers.
|
|
From my discussions with you I have learned that partly due to the lack of a collective response to a need,
the student scene in Hull is suffering. Lots of smaller groups- possibly due to the way student
accommodation is geographically spread around the city- mean that Hull seems to lack the student
community feeling that is witnessed in places like Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham etc.
|
|
Clearly the first year intake is already catching on to what we have known since this site started.
Everyone, club owners, promoters, venues alike are fighting each other for a small slice of the pie,
whereas if everyone worked together they could make the whole student/music scene in the city, bigger and better.
This would benefit the clubs, the bands, the customers, the city, everyone.
There is nothing wrong with competition but not when that competition starts to have an adverse effect
on your target customer group.
More communication and transparency is needed to deliver a better product otherwise you will be left
with only crumbs to scrap over.
|
As for the comments on drink prices I have to agree I couldn't buy a pint of anything upstairs at Grapevine
in its current location and bottles of vodka based drinks were £3.00 each.
The points raised about the DJs is a good one I talked with a number of you who just didn't want to dance
to the tunes being played. How can you have a nightclub experience if there is no-one dancing?
However, there is some good news that I can share with you: Grapevine at the Attic on George Street will offer
you so much more on the drinks front.
|
|
Drink Prices at the Attic £1.50 various draught beers, spirits and bottles.
£2.50 for special Grapevine cocktail!
To create more of a continuation of The Sesh night there are plans to run a bus from the Linnet and Lark
on Princes Ave. to the Attic on George St.
DJ MARK will be playing all your favourite tunes both underground and mainstream.
Join the launch Party on 1st March the Attic on George Street.
