1st March 05 - Grapevine First Birthday continued
By Michelle Dee
|
prev page
|
Music played that night included a twelve-inch version of Charming Man (New York mix)
that got so many dancing to Morrissey's echoic vocal samples. Everything from the
Jam to Joy Division- I put that on a job application once; the job was at a record
shop, I didn't get the job- tonight though they, and many others, were the
perfect combination.
Would love to hear a different Joy Division track instead of Love Will Tear us Apart
every time; they do the same thing at Sils: Twenty four hours or Dead souls maybe.
She's lost Control would be good, the twelve inch version from the Substance Album.
|
|
|
The usual suspects were thrown in the mix created by Soul Trader and Mark, Libertines,
Kaiser Chiefs and The Killers sat alongside some classic seventies body-rocking soul.
I was also introduced to some Northern soul and a new drink by Carl. He lost his friend
Darren early on in the night, and then made sure he and I had a totally cool night.
Thanks Carl, that was above and beyond, cheers.
|
|
Talking of drinks, they were reasonably priced if you failed to get them reduced
at drinks roulette, and quite a few were imbibed with relish.
I must admit I haven't had the almost certain pleasure of the Grapevine cocktail
yet, a good reason to go back.
Another good reason would be the atmosphere of the club, there is a place to go
and chill with spacey, spiky mood enhancing lighting.
|
|
As you go in, on your right hand side, there is a comfortable seating area that
beckons you to sit down and laugh among friends.
Alternatively you can seek out the half hidden lounging area at the back of the
club; row upon row of sofa style banquettes run the length of the walls.
Good design and good use of space; full marks to the layout consultants.
|
|
It would have been interesting to see what kind of effect having the upstairs
open would have on the number of dancers.
There were some good dancers; some great dancers even and then there were some
drunken lurches by some members of our treasured musical fraternity.
Oh yeah on any given night you can rub shoulders, with the likes of the
Paddingtons, Turismo, SideWinder, even an Applewhite or two.
|
|
|
As with the Sesh, you can't go two feet without recognizing some guy or girl
you saw weeks earlier plying there trade amongst the bright lights of Hulls music scene.
|
|
Thanks to Monty, it was his birthday too, for exchanging my badge for one of his bangles.
It now sits lovingly on my wrist as I type. All the staff deserve mentions; quick
to serve you, conscientious about clearing up the occasional glass that falls
from an over eager grasp.
They were smartly dressed and walking around collecting glasses in a proficient
yet unobtrusive manner.
|
|
At times you could have imagined you were in a London or Parisian club: the
staff at the Attic have managed to create an air of sophistication but not pretension,
cosmopolitan rather than exclusive.
|
You feel welcomed and loved, yeah if you ever feel ignored, unappreciated in our
fair city this is the place to be.
You leave feeling special and thoroughly exhilarated.
Even the Security staff, I'm loathe to call them bouncers, are approachable
and do not behave like adolescent gorillas.
They act in a civilised manner, unlike their counterparts are known to do in
other, less hospitable venues.
|
|
|
A promising new home for Grapevine, long may this new partnership prosper.
It's the place to be on a Tuesday night and only three pounds entry: great time,
great vibe, Grapevine. Loved it, loved it, loved it!

Many of you who go out on a regular basis will know the disappointment you get when you're
shakin' your thing on the dance floor and the music changes to your least favourite track.
Wouldn't it be nice for every song played to be one that you love, so you could party

Quite saddened by the fact that this was going to be my last trip to The Sesh in a while,
I hesitantly vacated the cars warm interior, knowing full well as soon as my battered
trainers hit the cold, coarse concrete, the evenings egg timer would be turned and
I would be left
