He became my mentor for many years, we used to do yoga in his apartment on 24th Street in the evening, smoke a fat joint in the sitting position and giggle, peering across the street to the apartments across the way where this absurdly fat woman would strip and start running naked on her treadmill with all the lights on, same time every night. It was like looking at guinea pigs in cages all doing their own thing at predefined times. This is where I first learned of Zen.
The apartment on 74th Street was 4 flights up, so I clambered up the stairs, took the key from its
hiding place, entered and put the kettle on for some tea.

|
My mind was on getting stoned, after the trauma of the weekend that was all I wanted.
|
|
I felt for the glass jar on the top shelf, he kept it in and was relieved to see a huge green bud, so I greedily picked some off, rolled a beauty and went to the window cracked it open and took my first puff. Boy I was in heaven, as the buzz took hold of my exhausted body I leaned further out of the window to avoid detection. This stuff sure stank.
With eyes that looked like egg yolks in a bucket of pigs blood, and a smile that would have any
Cheshire cat jealous I peered down below into the street.
Then it all began. Sirens blasting, 2 police cars followed by a fire engine appeared to be coming
down the street towards Jan's apartment block.
|
That's odd, I thought to myself as the noise grew louder and they all pulled up right outside the building. My impending panic was interrupted by a heavy banging on the door. This cannot be happening, had I been followed and trapped like a rat in a cage here or what? Oh shit.
I threw the joint out the window, hid the bud and went to answer the door.
Confronted by several burly fire fighters and a police officer, they pushed me aside and said,
'Dude, can't you smell it?'
|
|
|
Smell it? I almost crapped myself as they pushed passed me towards the open window.
One got out and proceeded to make his way to the next door apartment.
I moved towards the front door thinking to make a quick exit when the neighbor's door was opened by one of them, with my heart racing I peeked in and took a sharp breath.
Something sure did stink, the apartment looked like it had been ransacked and there was the body
of a man in the middle of the floor.
He had been dead for maybe 2 weeks and it reeked.

Articles - A Bridge Too Far - The Floods By Paul Wood
|

Well it was 10.30 am, the morning of the floods and I was on Newland Avenue at the Post Office, watching as the flood water washed up towards the door. I waded across the road ankle-deep to head home where I stayed most of the day.
Around lunch time, my neighbours were bailing out water from down the terrace as the rain had been continuous and it was

Articles - Crosswire Conspiracy By Buick McCain

During the summer of 2006 my grandmother sadly passed away. Amongst her possessions, that I was given responsibility for sorting, was a neatly filed and dated collection of my late grandfather's diaries, dating from the early 1940s.
Over the ensuing weeks I read and reread all my grandfathers' thoughts. Of his hopes and aspirations

Saint’s preserve us ... It’s the end of the world as we know it, the biblical flood has arrived to punish
Ella Street for its Liberal Bohemian ways.

terms with the man upstairs but it seems God is a raging Conservative who would see us all drown

Articles - The Drain - Memories of East Hull By Nicholas Boldock
|
|
It can sometimes transcend strangeness, the things we humans can have a fondness for.
Me, I rather like "The Drain", that muddy, filthy waterway that flows through East Hull, fostering luminous green algae and prehistoric hermaphrodite fish as it goes. At first glance the drain looks like not much more than a cleverly designed cesspool,

Articles - Buses By Andrea Longstaff

I was running to catch the number 13 bus in Bond Street when the driver, standing next to his vehicle and smoking a roll-up said to me "There's always going to be another bus you know" I replied that I had to be somewhere and was running late. "Why don't you walk then?" Hmmmmm and why don't you mind your own fucking business?

Articles - Behind the Wall - Ibrahim's Pavement Café By Rich Wiles, of Hull and Hebron

Most cities and town across Europe have a central square, or several, around which the city or town is built. These can include bustling market squares in rural England, lazy plazas in small Spanish villages, and huge piazzas in Italy's great Roman cities
Al-Khalil's (Hebron's) Beit Romano Square bears little in common with these

The Government and the Greenies moan like fuck about carbon emissions but I use public transport on a regular basis. I don't know if it's me going through an olfactory hallucinatory phase but the buses always seem to stink of rancid piss these days, and the people that you have to endure!

I managed to contract some sort of stomach bug over Christmas, so I spent the majority of it alternating between puking my guts up and shivering under a blanket. My dreams were populated by images of dead friends being devoured by giant skeletal insects in the ruins of Hull's new bus station,
and I became convinced that my neighbour was plotting to drive me
