After an agreement was reached he readily moved his stock in. He paid twenty pounds a week to rent the space and settled into a routine. The tailoring business was receding due to new methods of manufacture and the lure of high street shops, yet Kevin's business was expanding all the time. Soon he grew too large for the initial space, so moved further and further into the warehouse as the tailors business slowed and they in turn needed less and less room.

Some time later after he was established, there came a threat that the building was to be developed. It was then that he learned from Stan of the buildings' origins. The two men made a deal that Kev would pay a, 'mortgage' back and eventually he owned the place outright.

Since then Kevin Marshall has been going on his buying binges, filling every corner of every room with all manner of goods. He is a man who is open to all possibilities, "You never know what's around the corner," he says with an air of excitement. I ask him what his current penchant is, I'm hoping for a response describing some weird and wonderful item but he answers, "Old wooden filing cabinets, office style." Seeing no further way for expansion on the topic of filing cabinets, I move on and enquire about the workshops I had seen upstairs a little while ago.

Kevin explains that his son, also called Kevin, does restoration work in them as does he. Young Kevin was taught the basics then, from that time onwards, taught himself the art of restoration. As well as working with his father in the buying and selling side of the trade, he now restores everything from fireplaces, door knobs, flooring, all manner of furniture and also silver pocket watches. A large percentage of their customer base comes into the shop with something definite in mind that they want, but often leave with something else entirely after being distracted.

Customers hear about Kevin's antiques warehouse mostly through word of mouth, although he has advertised the business in many different places. For instance in specialist trade magazines where features have been written about Marshalls' Antiques. He has also advertised in taxis, buses and through local media. Kevin has found that there is a generational aspect to his customer base, the sons and daughters of customers past remember coming to the shop with their parents.
