An article was written in the Hull Daily Mail and I put leaflets in various libraries.
Then the phone started buzzing! I arranged to meet everyone at the Hull Business
Centre taking their photograph, asking what they do and it was an interesting evening.
I met around 50 different people, all enthusiastic about film, who I hadn't
been aware of before. Another evening was staged at the New Clarence pub,
upstairs in the function room and again I met loads of different people.
From the two evenings I established over a 100 new contacts, and following
my advert in the Hull City Arts I received resumes from Leeds, Grimsby and
Scunthorpe.
|
|
It was a fantastic response! The contacts directory was frequently used by
student filmmakers and also myself. I do intend to upload the contacts
directory on myspace which can be updated as and when with further resumes
from Lincoln and Newcastle.

Airport 9/11 was my next short film! A ghost story I read in the
Washington Post which I thought was very interesting. It only required
two actors and filmed in the cafe at Humberside airport. Authorisation
was given after my written request and much appreciated. However my
battery expired while filming and production was not complete, so we returned
to Humberside airport the following week.
|
|
|
No one denied my written request so we just turned up and started filming,
then 15 minutes later a police officer said 'what yer doing?'
Everyone looked at me and I explained we were making a film.
I showed the footage and he lightened up saying 'its alright with him,
but depends on security.' Then security arrived. 'What yer doing?'
I replied 'erm, making a film.' The security guy yelled at the bar
ladies 'didn't you see them?!'
|
|
I showed him the footage and he lightened up as well saying he knew
nothing about us coming and believed my explanation was 'legit.'
For ten minutes we filmed without interruption, then three plain
clothed officers appeared looking like the FBI.
Again I was interrogated and they believed my explanation of making a
film for the internet. I also mentioned the premiere at Slack Video.
However they never asked, what's the film title?
|
The title Airport 9/11
would probably give us a free ride in a police car!
But I would not volunteer this information anyway, and probably amend the title to Airport.
We eventually got authorisation and finished our production.
While driving home we had a good laugh about it and put it down
to experience. Airport 9/11 was well distributed and quite successful,
showing on myspace, YouTube, and the OTT film night. I wonder if the
police have seen it?
|
The Hull Big Screen showed it for two weeks and the title Airport 9/11
was very eye-catching. I noticed people looking over their shoulders
thinking it was a hate message from Osama Bin Laden, and not a ghost story.
Following my advert in shooting people Airport 9/11 was selected for
screening in the Action On Film festival in AMERICA!
|
|
Their email mentioned 'one of their screeners saw Airport 9/11 on
YouTube and we offer you a guaranteed screening in Los Angeles.' Wow,
I thought and my DVD was sent, but I never attended the screening in LA.
In 2006 I was cast in One Day I Shall Rule The World (a short film in
Grimsby) and produced The World Of Big Ideas. Both were a high standard
of filmmaking. The World Of Big Ideas was shown on the Hull Big Screen
everyday for three weeks and also at Leeds. Propeller TV (Sky digital 195)
showed it over a dozen times! It was a very popular and successful film.
Seeing your work on television is a great experience. I often wonder who
else is watching it or what they think.

Articles - Hydroponics
By Stuart Batley
|
|
Hydroponics in general is a way of growing plants and vegetables of all kinds indoors or in a greenhouse without soil in water containing essential mineral nutrients. Many commercial vegetables are grown this way these days in huge greenhouses. The term hydroponics is derived from Greek word and literally means 'working water'.
There are many system variations on

Articles - A Bridge Too Far - The Floods By Paul Wood
|
|
Well it was 10.30 am, the morning of the floods and I was on Newland Avenue at the Post Office, watching as the flood water washed up towards the door. I waded across the road ankle-deep to head home where I stayed most of the day.
Around lunch time, my neighbours were bailing out water from down the terrace as the rain had been continuous and it was

Articles - Crosswire Conspiracy By Buick McCain

During the summer of 2006 my grandmother sadly passed away. Amongst her possessions, that I was given responsibility for sorting, was a neatly filed and dated collection of my late grandfather's diaries, dating from the early 1940s.
Over the ensuing weeks I read and reread all my grandfathers' thoughts. Of his hopes and aspirations

Saint’s preserve us ... It’s the end of the world as we know it, the biblical flood has arrived to punish
Ella Street for its Liberal Bohemian ways.
We thought that all our pot smoking, hippy festivals and savage alcohol problems would put us on square
terms with the man upstairs but it seems God is a raging Conservative who would see us all drown

Articles - The Drain - Memories of East Hull By Nicholas Boldock
|
|
It can sometimes transcend strangeness, the things we humans can have a fondness for.
Me, I rather like "The Drain", that muddy, filthy waterway that flows through East Hull, fostering luminous green algae and prehistoric hermaphrodite fish as it goes. At first glance the drain looks like not much more than a cleverly designed cesspool,

Articles - Buses By Andrea Longstaff

I was running to catch the number 13 bus in Bond Street when the driver, standing next to his vehicle and smoking a roll-up said to me "There's always going to be another bus you know" I replied that I had to be somewhere and was running late. "Why don't you walk then?" Hmmmmm and why don't you mind your own fucking business?

Articles - Behind the Wall - Ibrahim's Pavement Café By Rich Wiles, of Hull and Hebron

Most cities and town across Europe have a central square, or several, around which the city or town is built. These can include bustling market squares in rural England, lazy plazas in small Spanish villages, and huge piazzas in Italy's great Roman cities
Al-Khalil's (Hebron's) Beit Romano Square bears little in common with these

The Government and the Greenies moan like fuck about carbon emissions but I use public transport on a regular basis. I don't know if it's me going through an olfactory hallucinatory phase but the buses always seem to stink of rancid piss these days, and the people that you have to endure!
