Yankeeburger By John Science

I came across your website purely by accident when I was looking for any comments regarding Yankeeburger in Jameson Street. I was pleasantly surprised to read that a Vivian Wan from Australia worked there in the 80's and referred to me as a 'great guy' -a compliment indeed. I do remember we had some wonderful students from Asia during that period who worked at Yankeeburger, to help pay their way during their studies in Hull, and I often wondered what became of them.

Anyway, some of your readers will remember, Yankeeburger in Jameson street eventually closed for redevelopment, and I opened the Yankeeburger Diner and Drive thru on Hessle Road during 1991, where I spent nearly 10 fabulous years until the diner was sold to Russell's Restaurants of York. Any business is only as good as the employees who work there, and I was fortunate to have a team of chefs and servers who made Yankeeburger such a success. Again, many students from all over the globe worked part time to help pay for their studies.

Sadly 'time waits for no man' and I am now retired (70 this year), and the aches and pains are beginning to set in. It is sad to see the sometimes bad press on television that portrays Hull in a bad light. I was born and bred in Hull and spent all my business life there. Hull might have its problems but make no mistake, the people of Hull are the kindest, warmest and most loyal on this planet. Whether you are from Hull or 'ull, remember you are the best !!
