Wilberforce House - New Exhibition By Michael Smith Age 15

The house of William Wilberforce has been converted into a fabulous exhibition dedicated to the Slave trade and its abolition along with the life of William Wilberforce and his work. Such a museum is exactly the correct thing to do to the very house that William lived and worked in. The museum is an emotional and educational experience that should be felt by all. The many artefacts on show at the museum include the shackles, Hausa people's swords, the nail screws from slave ships, branding irons and even a replica ration of food and water.

Such a tribute to William and the history of the Africans enslaved globally is lined with a colourful, picturesque and quiet garden which is quite the opposite of the inner theme to the museums exhibits.

The museum has donations from such black celebrities as Ian Wright who has donated a signed Arsenal football shirt to show his support for the Stop Racism campaign. Other donations from supporters of the Stop Racism campaign of celebrity status are Ainsley Harrlot, Clive Sullivan, David Lammy MP and Bob Marley.

Am I Not A Women Or A Sister carries a very dominating, thought provoking and inhumane message that illustrates how wrong the slave trade and the forced labour of Africans was and still is today. Although the Slave trade was abolished in 1807, Williams' bill was passed to make it unlawful for anyone to capture and enslave anyone in the once vast British Empire.

Slavery was still looked upon as acceptable as Williams' bill did not outlaw slavery, only the trade of slaves.

The museum also contains and displays a modern campaign of anti racism in the form of the No To Racism and the Lets Kick Racism Out Of Football campaigns.

I believe the inhumane slave trade was common and acceptable in the 15th to the early 19th century where it reached such vile levels. In some countries the slave trade and slavery are still as common as popping down to the shops for any European citizen.

Today I feel that people need to be more aware of the great things that William Wilberforce campaigned and fought so hard for. I have noticed the common allegation that William abolished slavery but that would be a false allegation. William was one of several campaigners that made a grave difference but he created the bill to stop the slave trade which seemed to have a big weeping loop hole in it. That loop hole was that it did not include the abolition of slavery only the trade. This allowed slavery to continue for many years after. Of course, there was going to be illegal trade of slaves as there was so much money in it.

I would like to applaud William for the grave difference he made and like to say that the William is so deserving of such a tribute of the museum.
