Response to Hull Flood Aid - What's It All About? (1/2) By Chester Draws

I must confess I found Michelle Dee's article on Hull Flood aid much more lucid and sober than some of her previous creative explorations and I for one am glad she had the inclination and good sense to raise the issue. Still, it was only a bit of water and although some people have lost possessions and property at least it provided them with a bit of excitement and release from the long drawn out nights of Coronation Street marathons and pie abuse.

The real truth behind the Hull city council is half of them are incompetent drunks and part time sexual deviants who spend their work days having long lunches and pointless meetings and the other half are intelligent, forthright individuals who could do a lot of good for this city given the opportunity. It's wrong to tar everyone with the same brush but as long as the liberals are undermining labour, labour are undermining the liberals and everyone is laughing (and rightly so) at the Conservatives, Hull city council is never going to be an effective or respected governing body.

However, floods are a natural phenomenon and much of Hull is built on swampy marshland so you can hardly blame the council for not holding back the tide. Sure, they've spent silly money on ridiculous poles outside of benefit offices and Council leader Carl Minns has Peter Sutcliffe's eyes but we have the fish trail for god's sake and I for one feel a sense of civic pride every time I urinate on a bronze cod in the pavement after a night on the sauce. I must strongly disagree with Michelle's comments on the St. Stephens projects and the redevelopment of the Marina and I think she's being reactionary for the sake of it with regard to these matters.

St. Stephens will provide many jobs for the city and sure most of them will be low paid retail positions but hopefully we will attract more shoppers into the area which will have the knock on effect of boosting the local economy. The same goes for the Marina development. Christ knows where she's got the idea of a 'market and community feeling built out of hundreds of years of trading' but even if we give her the benefit of the doubt on that one, I think a new Marina with some classy bars, swish apartments and funky boutiques could be the jewel in Hulls crown and even though there is a chance that the council will mess it up completely I'll reserve judgment until I've seen the final results.

It's a funny thing but ability and intelligence has its paradoxes because you would think that the intelligent people would be running the show, but intelligent people don't want to run the show because they know that the show is being run by idiots, back stabbers and people of limited understanding. It's like the band Oasis, see. When they were living the working class life, grabbing money where they could it find it and mixing with the masses at the local boozer they were able to write good songs that people could identify with. They knew what the common people wanted because they were the common people.
