A Bridge Too Far - The Floods By Paul Wood

Well it was 10.30 am, the morning of the floods and I was on Newland Avenue at the Post Office, watching as the flood water washed up towards the door. I waded across the road ankle-deep to head home where I stayed most of the day. Around lunch time, my neighbours were bailing out water from down the terrace as the rain had been continuous and it was creeping towards the vents for the floorboards - water never reached that point.

I had a call from my partner at around 3.30 pm asking me to pick her up at work. I got to Newland Avenue in the car and what I saw was unreal. Water flooded under the railway bridge which was now blocked off to traffic, diverting down De Grey street which was also flooded. I went down Princes Road, to be stopped by police who directed me up Princes Avenue which was awash with flood water right into the park and streets opposite.

Reaching Cave Street, as I got about half way down it too was heavily flooded. Having negotiated that, Beverley Road was clear through to town. My return journey was blocked at Queens Road/Newland roundabout. Police directed me yet again up the flooded Princes Avenue and I eventually got through to the bottom of Victoria Avenue to abandon my car and walk to Jack Kaye Walk, Ella Street. What greeted us there was flood water under the railway bridge which we had to wade through to get home, the water was above knee height and very cold.
