"Bastard" screamed poor Antoine as his little finger hung limply from his hand. "Maybe I am, but you now need a delivery driver friend" It took two days for Benoits' contacts to arrange the necessary paperwork for my new position as driver for the incapacitated Antoine and for a month we traversed Amiens to the selected targets. I made scribbled notes under Antoine's vest to avoid using pen and paper and as much as I had grown to like him, the bloke reeked of body odour!

One of the quirks of the Entente Cordiale was that much of the French Railways system had been designed by British engineers and as a consequence no one had realised until the rolling stock was in place, that it was designed to operate from the right and not the left, as was common practice throughout mainland Europe. Apparently it sent German rail staff into a state of apoplexy!

Troops, tanks and supplies from the 4th Panzer division and various SS units were using Amiens as a conduit for disbursement across the length and breadth of Northern France. And so disrupting the mass troop movements seemed to make the railway station our logical target.

We had three weeks to plan our attack. Three weeks before the next full moon. We needed the moon to avoid using torches and as much as I had tried to drill it into the boys, I knew that some of them would fall into the old habit of using matches. Benoit knew of an old tin mine, miles from anywhere that we could use to test out the plastic explosives that had lain dormant in the crypt of the church.

The night of the full moon was a Sunday and, oddly, for such a faithless society the Germans reduced the guard on Sundays to allow the god fearing amongst them to attend church!

Bertrand arranged for me to stay with his in-laws a few hundred yards from the marshalling yard for a week so that I could observe the routine of the staff and guards. There was always a four man dog patrol on duty and there was a permanently manned light armoured vehicle and anything between twenty and thirty Waffen SS commandos on duty at any time. These weren't conscripts; these were battle hardened soldiers hand picked from Hitler's elite regiments. What the hell they were doing in Amiens god only knows but London had insisted on this being our priority and London knew best! I was going to lose my fighting virginity to some of the most vicious sods on earth and I really wasn't expecting it to be a pleasure!
