Whole New Life By Peter Fenwick

Having lost my wife's father in September this year we inherited his allotment in Tavistock Street off Newland Avenue. Sue's dad Stan had kept his allotment for 15 years. Our first job at the allotment was to dig up 24 rows of potatoes. This mammoth task took about three weeks, and I think everyone we knew received a sack of organic spuds. Then it was time to pick the green beans, and then the tomatoes. Oh my aching back, feet and hands! We have cleared the whole allotment of the vegetables that were growing, and prepared eight new raised beds for growing green vegetables next year.

We have dug out a wildlife pond for the frogs, toads, newts, kestrels, hedgehogs, partridges, foxes, and wild birds. We will start seed planting in March to April.

The local allotment keepers offer advice on growing, digging, seeding, planting out etc. Considering we have never ever been interested in the great outdoors and gardening, we have taken to it well, and looking forward to our first year as allotment keepers. We are very new to this lifestyle and always take on board what the local (expert) allotment keepers tell us. Each allotment is about 250 square yards, available from Hull City Council Parks and Gardens department. The cost of each allotment is £25.00 per annum. My advice to anyone who has a few hours spare each week would be to get yourself a plot and start growing your own. I'm sure we'll love it eventually!
