You could also meet up at the Folk Club where gradually the music changed from folk to The Merseysound
with a bit of Joan Baez and Bob Dylan thrown in for good measure.
But there was more excitement to come.
A Wimpy Bar opened up at the top of Wright Street, where you could meet up with friends over a burger and
bap, filled with reconstituted dried onions, and squeeze on tomato sauce from a tomato shaped plastic bottle. Cool heh!

More and more groups came along and of course they started touring.
We were very lucky in Hull, we had the top acts of the time come to the A.B.C. cinema on Ferensway.
In those days you did not have just one headline act, you would have three or four.
I remember some memorable nights, seeing acts like Lulu, Gene Pitney, and The Rolling Stones, all on the same bill!
The main night though was when the Beatles came to the A.B.C. On the night the tickets went on sale my mum had
to sneak me out of bed when my dad had fallen asleep, because he had said
No way was I camping out all night just to get tickets to see those long haired yobs, which sounds quite strange
now when you see photos of them in their smart Beatle suits and well groomed haircuts.
|
|
My mum had made me a flask of hot cocoa and supplied a blanket in case it got cold, and then walked with me to the top of the street, where I had arranged to meet a friend. With her blessing we went off on our adventure leaving her to break the news to my dad in the morning.
|
When we arrived at the A.B.C. we had to join the queue right down Ferensway.
We set up camp on the floor, with the wall of the car park to lean against.
The atmosphere was electric; everyone was there for the same reason, to see their favourite group.
Someone had brought along a new fangled portable tape recorder and we listened and sang along to Beatles songs.
At about 3.00.a.m someone shouted that the booking office was open.
|
|
|
In hindsight no-way would that have happened, but at the time everyone panicked and rushed forward,
we nearly lost our place, but everyone was great and after the initial panic we all got back in an
orderly queue.
|
|
The morning dawned and I woke up full of aches and pains after an uncomfortable night, but full of
excitement with the prospect of getting my precious ticket.
The police came along and herded us like sheep into pens, holding so many at a time.
When it got to our time to be moved towards the open doors, some people got over excited
and police horses were used to control us.
|
|
It was just my luck to get trodden on by one of the horses, so after I got my ticket
I limped home to face my Dad.
|
As it happened, as I came down the terrace my dad was looking out for me! But as soon as he saw me limping all he was interested in was how I was, and what had happened, but none of that mattered. I had my precious ticket, even though it was six rows from the back!
The great night arrived, and I went along resplendent in my Beatles tights, Beatles jewellery, and with
the compliments of my dad, his binoculars.

|
To be perfectly honest I never heard a lot, because we were all screaming that loud, but I will remember that night for the rest of my life.
