Samaritans (4/4)
By Michelle Dee
(1/4), (2/4), (3/4), (4/4).

It is mandatory to talk to a central listener after every duty. This person is there for the volunteer to download emotions, talk confidentially about the calls they have had that duty and explore any issues arising from them.
In this way an effort is made to ensure the listeners don't take the specialised work home with them. It is vital to give them continued support in delivering a service of a high, uniform standard. It would be irresponsible to expect listeners to provide a service to the community, then not provide that same service of listening, to them in turn.
Volunteers say openly that, working as a Samaritan is rewarding in so many ways, not only the close supportive relationships built up with fellow Samaritans, but the contact through involvement in community events can open doors that hitherto have remained unknown.

A commitment to Samaritans can be a large one and a lot of your spare time could be taken up volunteering, because of this many volunteers see their branch almost like another family.
If you want to learn more about the increasingly important work Samaritans do in your area, visit www.samaritans.org and talk to somebody about joining these unique individuals who very often do deeply personal work; day in, day out; unseen, unpaid and largely forgotten by the rest of society. The Hull branch is situated at: 75 Spring Bank Hull HU3 1AG

Call Samaritans if you or someone you know needs confidential support on:
08457 90 90 90 alternatively for hearing loop 08457 90 91 92.
To use the email service contact: jo@samaritans.org
T enquire about volunteering please call O8705 627 282
To make a donation at a central level please call 08709 00 00 32

All calls are charged at a local rate.

Articles - Has It Only Been A Year? (A Personal History of thisisUll.com) By Rich Mills
Well in actual fact it's been just over a year, but the title of this piece was long enough without starting to split hairs on the timing of this piece not coinciding with the actual anniversary of thisisUll.com. Now I'm proud to say I was there at the Read more...

Articles - Made In Hull - Part Four - Schooldays
By Maurice Fairfield
My first day at school is still vivid in a misty sort of way. We were all given a little child-sized blackboard, with a tiny blackboard eraser and some chalk. So far so good. Unfortunately I thought it was mine and when they wanted it back they had to take it by brute force. The blackboard was Read more...

Articles - Eat Your End of an Era By Joe Hakim
So I agree to go and watch my mate play a set at the Welly club. I've stopped clubbing, but I go anyway, because he's my mate and I said I would. When I say clubbing, I mean the whole go out take drugs and dance thing. Read more...

Articles - Peoples of Olde England (the North/South divide) - a declaration of war By The King Rat
Since the dawn of time before English folk focussed their anger on immigrants and the sharp decline of Only Fools and Horses, we whiled away the hours hating anyone and everyone. We hated our families, our neighbours, our fellow townspeople. We hated people on TV, successful people Read more...

Articles - Our Telephone Pole By Mo
Poking my head out of the window I asked "Can I take some pictures for the website?". "No problem came the reply" from Alan the team leader looking up from the base of the pole. Another story lands in my lap I thought, as I unloaded the battery charger and slipped the first rechargeable into our 150 quid Minolta digital camera. Read more...

Articles - My New Boss By Joe Hakim
My new boss is a Nazi pig-fucker from Hell. There, I've said it. Just writing it and then re-reading it is enough to make me feel immeasurably better about my work related predicament. My current job involves working with the general public, a vague term at best. Read more...

Articles - THE LUCKY BASTARDS CLUB (A Reporter`s Tale)
By Denis Price
`I`m a bit worried about this,` said Austin, the man from the `Daily Record`. I looked at him and then peered through the clubhouse window at our aircraft. `You`ll be alright`, I said reassuringly, `Its got the right number of wings and wheels, it`ll be a piece of cake`. I winced at the use of wartime RAF slang and Read more...

Articles - Quit Your Job For A Healthier Mind and Body
By Andy Dykes
Before I begin, I would just like to take this opportunity to say that this isn't intended to be some anarchic rant about how we should all escape the rat race, subverting and thus bringing about the downfall of the evil that is the capitalist system under which we all live, but don't all prosper. Read more...

Articles - Selling an Engine By Joe Hakim
So I'm at my mate's house. It's my night off, and he's just finished work, so I go there for something to do. Do something other than my girlfriend for a change. My mate and I sit and smoke a couple of joints and listen to really old-school rap like NWA and Public Enemy. We talk about the Read more...

Articles - Things To Do Before You're 30
Part 5 By Sarah Tomlinson
How many jobs do you go through before actually finding your cause? I've only had a few jobs; 2 to be quite honest. Been offered another, but didn't accept it, god knows why (wish he'd tell me). I always have some weird ideas, like a few months back it was to start a photography business Read more...

Articles - AIESEC - Hull To Slovakia, making that change.
By Mike Kemp
People who have attended University know how daunting it can be. I was one of them and still am in some cases. I can remember my first day clearly. I was terrified that I would not fit in and the work would be to difficult. Yea, the work is difficult but what do you expect? It is University but fitting in was not a problem thanks to Read more...

Articles - The Soundtrack of my Life: Essex Girls and Electric Warriors By Lee Cassanell
During the mid to late seventies my mother worked in the music department at WH Smith which at that time was the place where most of Hulls record buying public purchased the latest vinyl releases. One her biggest claims to fame is that she arranged the promotional stand for a little film Read more...

Articles - Art Views at the Seaside By Patrick Henry
Scarborough has an oddly uneven relation to art: an historic, refined place of coastal vistas would be expected to spawn a wealth of painters creating here, but it seldom occurred. Lord Frederick Leighton, outstanding son of the town, became President of the Royal Academy Read more...

Articles - Is there anything about Hull? By Alexander Porter
After three years away from the city of my birth I've ended up living here again. Whilst I was away I discovered just about everyone I knew of was proud or had something good to say about their home town. I couldn't. For eighteen years I hated Hull with a passion. But now I'm back, edumacated Read more...
