"Funky's" Matt Hill writes to us from Thailand (2/2) (1/2), (2/2).

My class this afternoon... as you can see we were doing capital punishment, and above my board are pictures of Aung San and his daughter Aung San Suu Kyi, the famous Burmese revolutionaries.

There's this cool woman everyone's talking about over here, turns out her Birthday's recently and it's being celebrated worldwide - REM, Damien Rice & Feeder have released songs dedicated to the event, MTV is covering it, Tony Blair is meeting people about it, etc.
Why? For that I need to give you a very brief bit of History, so stick with it :-)

The news won't talk about it, but the people of Burma, next to Thailand, have it A LOT worse than in Iraq or Afghanistan etc. About 30 years ago the military took over the country, machined gunned thousands of protestors and BOMBED the main University, and now uses slave labour to build roads and railways and gives life sentences to people who hand out democracy leaflets.

In 1988 there were elections, but the leading candidate (Suu Kyi) was so popular the military arrested her. When the results came, she and her party won a landslide victory with over 80% of the votes, despite the fact she was still arrested! The military, refusing to give up power, gave her the choice - leave the country or stay in prison. She refused to abandon the country, and so remaining under house arrest, meaning that the army won't allow her to leave her house or speak to anyone. And now they still hold her under house arrest. This year saw her 60th Birthday, and people around the world showed their support.
Spread the word.

To end this thrilling set I thought it'd be interesting to show you my room... so here it is.

A box-room with a very cheap mattress on the floor and a small mosquito net over the top. So now you know.

Take it easy,

Matt
