But the religious nutters are not confined solely to America; we have some over here as well. According to Dr Trevor Stammers, writing in the British Medical Journal The discipline of abstinence in teenage years is a good preparation for fulfilling sex in later life. Well I fail to see how that can be the case. That same principle would never be applied successfully to any other area of life so why should it be the case with sex. I somehow don't imagine David Beckham being told that he would be a better more fulfilled footballer if he didn't play at all until he was twenty five or Steven Hawking being told to lay off the quantum physics until his mid thirties because then it would all become clear.

He goes on to say that Sexually active teenagers are more likely to be emotionally hurt and have an increased risk of depression and suicide. Well I can't speak for anyone other than myself, but the only depression I can remember during my teenage years was as a result of my being sexually inactive.

And the only time I considered suicide was when my Mother discovered several well-thumbed and sticky copies of Mayfair under my bed. Dr Stammers also states that abstinence programmes from the US resulted in a reduction in the number of pregnancies. Well I never! This is the sort of insight and understanding of the human body that you can only possibly achieve after seven years at medical college. And if, like myself, you're thinking it's all a bit too late anyway; well think again because you can become a secondary virgin.

Women will be pleased to know that this does not involve an operation to replace the hymen. You do in fact become a virgin in name only by becoming celibate and therefore freeing yourself from all the pain and evil of those pre marital encounters.

What people of all ages need is information not indoctrination, education that allows them to make reasoned judgements based on their own values. Alice Fryling says that Good sex begins in the head and I really don't know if I can disagree with that or not; let's just say it depends on my mood. But kids beware! Making the choice to be abstinent is a difficult option. It can be a lonely path with little help and may result in you having to handle things yourself! And it will!
