More Famous Than Christmas (3/3)
By Jim Higo
(1/3), (2/3), (3/3).

They believe that those pagans who indulge in the worship of the sun are in league with Satan, which had they been referring to the newspaper I might be persuaded to agree. But of course Satan comes from a land down under; from a barren land, a land of excessive heat and bitter cold, a land of fearful sights and foul odours; whereas Rupert Murdoch comes from Australia, so clearly there is no comparison.

Hard liners see Christmas as a mark of the beast (or Gary Glitter's signature as it's now known) and they are encouraging everyone to cease their celebrations.
They say that it is a false, misleading wonder of the Antichrist, which is designed to seduce me into worshipping him.
They argue that it's a festival which honours fertility and sexual licence, that it encourages drunkenness and debauchery and I suppose they've got a point as there's probably quite enough of that in the church already.

Christians argue that they are not comfortable perpetuating the lie to their children of Father Christmas visiting millions of homes every year with presents. Far better to concentrate on the more believable immaculate conception, walking on water, turning water into wine stories of the Bible.
But for once I'm with the hard liners in agreeing that we should strive to get Christianity out of the Yuletide festival. If nothing else it will at least ensure that Cliff Richard never has another Christmas number one.
