The Beast In The Basement
By Graham Lee

Every so often a paranormal investigation can uncover spirit beings which are not of human origin. As well as humans who have passed over, there are Angels, animal spirits, faeries, elementals, nature spirits and a whole host of inter-dimensional entities. One particular example of this is the entity lurking in the dark corridors of a large hotel which I visited recently.

This hotel is an impressive and atmospheric building located in Cumbria and has an array of reported apparitions and ghostly goings on. With a history crammed full of major events from as far back as the Roman era, this place promised to be a dead cert for spirit activity.
To the rear of the building is a door which leads to the cellar. As you open this door you can feel a definite energy in the air. Descending into the dark corridors, you get the distinct feeling that you are being watched.

Progress into the actual cellars is slow as you have to hunch over to make your way past the pipes in the ceiling. As I stood at the foot of the stairs with an eager bunch of ghost hunters, and not a single glint of light in the place, I found myself being spied upon from the rear of the corridor.
As a medium, I have become used to seeing spirit people and animals so as a rule I have no problem when they show themselves, but the entity I saw leering around the corner at me was one of the most horrific and frightening creatures I have ever laid eyes on.
To begin with it was immense, it's shape-shifting bulk filled the entire lower section of the corridor. Its face was a vast contorting mass of teeth and rotting flesh. It had large shovel like hands which it used to drag itself along the corridor towards us.

The legs of the beast were useless, with iron shackles on them and a chain which dragged along the ground.
As it came closer I could sense that it was deaf and half blind. It could not speak any language I could understand and it seemed to be in absolute agony. But perhaps the most terrifying aspect of the creature was not its appearance, nor was it the sheer torment I could feel from it.
The most terrifying aspect was that it made a conscious decision to follow us. This thing stalked us throughout the corridors and into a small room right at the back of the cellars.

This small room housed a generator, a rack of old bits and bobs that were in storage and a table with three broadswords on it, which had obviously been on display in the main hall. The groups joined hands and asked for a sign that the spirit was near. We were not to be disappointed.
The first request for a sign was greeted by a loud clanging noise from the back of the room. Of course we were all holding hands in the séance, so none of us had made that noise. The second request for a sign was met by the door bursting open into one of the other mediums. The third request was answered by the handle of one of the broadswords rocking, before the sword began to lift slightly off the table.
This was enough for all of us and we literally ran out of that cellar in terror with the creature slithering after us. The worst part of this was that you had to duck down low to avoid pipes and so your progress to the exit was painfully slow!
Once out of the cellar we all had a good old laugh remembering how scared we were, and we were all safe and unharmed. But if ever I find myself investigating that property again, I will not be going down into those cellars...
