Stranger in a Strange Land
By Rich Mills
Concrete kid. That's what I told her I considered myself. Bollocks to the countryside.
The fresh air would probably kill me! Urgh and the smell of cow-shit! Ah, how wrong could I have been?
We travelled up to the Dales, far up in the north of our great county.
A place where they have proper hills like! Not flat-land like 'ere! Dry-stone walls, sheep, community, peace, harmony, and a local pub where I spent a vast amount of my time while there, as did most of the indigenous population in the area - there is nowhere else to bloody go!
However issues of alcoholism aside, and my need to admit myself into a clinic for the next few weeks
afterwards, I had a cracking time! I was welcomed wherever I went.
The concrete kid striding through green fields, and over said dry-stone walls, waving hello to sweater
and bobble hat wearing middle aged, middle class, ramblers. With a cheery how d'you do we went on our way. In the land of grey and brick, they would have probably crossed the road and tutted at the image of such as me.
Here we were all God's children, and the land was ours to enjoy, free of attitudes built up by the
city walls bearing down us from all around, day upon day, year after year, etc... Earth first
and all that green stuff the liberal Avenues Veggies rant on about.
I can see their point to some extent. Although you'd never get me to sit in a tree for 3
months defending a quarry, or some small clump of trees of historical interest,
or a henge (some lumps and bumps in the ground apparently, and not a stone circle necessarily,
I've come to learn). Or just whatever. It's not part of who I am to do that.
But I get why others my wish to. All power to them and their struggle, however futile
and an utterly pointless waste of good political energy as I may see it.
Anyway. All this experience has done for me at the end of the day is confirm
what I've been thinking for many years. I need to escape Hull.
Now I love and hate Hull in equal measure, but more recently the resentment for this
place has been building-up.
I've done my bit, exhausted all avenues, burnt many bridges, etc.. it's now come time to move on.
Sorry guys!
Six months I reckon. Then outta here! Who know really? But the decision has been made,
and I will do it this time.
Too many opportunities have I passed by, in the past. Not this one.
There is a world out there to conquer.. Erm.. I mean discover!
And I will bring back whatever I see, hear, or experience to the good people
at thisisull.com, or even
thisistheworld.com.
But whatever I do, and wherever I go, my digital self will always be near at hand. Anyway
you've got at least 6 months of mad ranting here to go, before I spread my wings.

Articles - Things To Do Before You're 30 By Sarah Tomlinson
They say the first lines are always the hardest to write. I suppose they're not wrong.
It took ages to think that up.
I'm Sarah, 18 years old and born and bred in Hull, or as the locals call it 'ull. Hull is supposed to be the bog hole at the end of the M1.
I disagree. Hull is a place where you can do almost anything you want, within the law

Articles - Made In Hull - Part Two - Our Terrace By Maurice Fairfield
Ours was the typical terrace. Some had houses with small front gardens and a path down the middle to each front door.
Not so Alex Avenue; a short dead-end courtyard with seven houses on each side.
Foot traffic only, in fact the head of the terrace was enclosed by a hoop topped iron fence with a gate

Articles - A Secret Revealed - The Hutt Street Party! 18th April 2004 By Rich Mills
For many years I had heard of the myth of the Hutt Street Party.
Spoke in whispers across the Avenues enclave for years, many had heard of it, quite a few had been to one, but still many it seems are in the dark.
Basically it goes like this.. By word of mouth you get to hear about the party, which goes on in the house on Hutt Street. Hence the name!

My story begins in Arundel Street and wanders away to the shallow end of Holderness Road next door to the tram sheds and opposite the old Astoria Cinema, which was at that time the New Astoria Cinema.
Then to Hedon for a time, then back to Arundel a couple of years before the outbreak of the war.

Articles - Speed Dating By Ash Jamieson
I've seen it. I've peeked down the rabbit's hole.
A large group of people all looking for love in a pub on White Friar Gate. Great to watch, daunting to be a part of but on the whole, good fun all round.
Speed dating, for those that have never witnessed the phenomena, is exactly what it sounds like.
Dating at speed. A group of people split down

Articles - The Oscars 2004 By Steve Rudd
The highlight of Hollywood's calendar, The Oscars seem to come around faster every year.
Our man in LA to report back to Britain on proceedings was Film 2004 face Jonathan Ross who didn't do a bad job at all, but seemed hampered by his panel of three accompanying guests in the form of Welsh (supposed) funnyman
Rob Brydon, and the impersonating duo of Ronni

Articles - If You Tolerate This, Your Children Will Be Next
(How Hull helped the children of Spain.) By Rich Mills
In May 1937 the Spanish liner Habana left Bilbao in Spain, on-board were 4,200 Basque children being brought to the safety of the UK.
The Spanish Civil War had started on July 17th 1936, and the world stood by and watched in horror as innocents were slaughtered.
Some however took it upon themselves to do something about the blood-shed.

Articles - Pregnancy - Revisited by Nicholas Boldock

Life - it's a funny old game. Love, loss, rejection, success, pride, humility, happiness, sorrow - all part and parcel of the old cradle-to-grave board game. Personally, my life has taken a turn for the "bloody hectic" over the last week or so. And I think I now have an idea what this funny old game is all about.
Those of you who are lucky enough to have no problems with short..
