When I was younger, like most iddy-biddy girls, I had the dream of being a pop star. Singing, dancing, whatever on stage and having thousands of mad fans calling my name and singing the words of my latest single. Admittedly that dream carried on for me. So much so that it's kind of still there. But the dream of stardom took a back seat to what was more of an achievable target.

I was always interested in medicine; it intrigued me, a lot. But if all the signs are saying Sarah, I'm not going to let you do this, should we fight it and really strive for our goals, I mean really?

Because if we should, then one may ask .. why isn't every little girl a pop star? Is ambition stronger when we're youngsters or does it grow with us?

Today I had one of those signs that told me not to follow a medical path..again. Because my local colleges don't run chemistry and human biology A-Levels at night I decided to check out one of those home learning website things. It all looks good so I go ahead to the payment page. Sorry we cannot process your order, please contact our customer services on .. blah blah blah. I ring the customer services and its shut.

One more thing, just to top it off.. today is the last day of enrolment before October. Should I give up? Being the only one constantly telling everyone around me to keep going, to do your best, don't give, you can do what you want, I now wonder, was it this hard to do what everyone else wanted to do?

Every single time I sit and watch a film I wonder, what if that was me, up there, on the big screen? Why didn't I go for that dream? But then it comes back to, but I'm happy where I am, aren't I? And man, I could go round in circles for days with those questions.

No, I like the idea of helping people in medicine. If I can fight the odds of everything trying to stop me, I will have my way and it will be so much more satisfying that way too. I can't be a sales assistant forever. So, I suppose the moral is, try anything once but do whatever you want no matter what the other forces want you to do. Well, at least I know what I mean. Things to do before you're thirty? Fulfil at least one childhood dream.
