They say the first lines are always the hardest to write. I suppose they're not wrong.
It took ages to think that up.
I'm Sarah, 18 years old and born and bred in Hull, or as the locals call it 'ull. Hull is supposed to be the bog hole at the end of the M1.
I disagree. Hull is a place where you can do almost anything you want, within the law of course.
There's somewhere to go to get wrecked, somewhere to go to shop till you drop, loads of places to drive, loads of
places to..mmmmm..eat! I really don't know what everyone complains about.
|
Well I'm from Hull and proud of it might I add. And this article is about the life I lead.
But don't worry, its not as self involved as you think.
So here goes..
|
Life ponders on as and when it wants, and sometimes leaves us behind.
A shock to the system can't do us any good if we don't have time to embellish and resolve.
I found this out the hard way.
I had one of those shocks that you can see coming a mile away, but doesn't really want to happen until it
happens and you're soooooo not ready for it.
The way to deal, I believe, is to get out of yourself, to do something that really isn't you.
|
|
|
At the minute, the thing that really isn't me is men.
So that's what I've been trying, but I seem to repel guys when I want them, even if just for a while.
There is a guy. He was all mine when I didn't really want him.
But now, I couldn't reach him if my arms were a 100 feet long.
The worst thing is he's leaving for good very shortly, big bummer. Then what do I do?
|
|
Do we all see men as a challenge?
If a guy doesn't like us like that after it never been proposed, will it become an everlasting painful
friendship?
|
Example: Ok, one thing to clear up first, I work with this guy, that's where I met him, at work.
So it's before Christmas we leave work and I propose a drink or two at The Admiral (local pub), he says yes
and away we go.
One drink turns in to two, two into four, and before you know it, it's last orders.
Time flew for the two of us and my throat was soar from our 5-hour conversation.
Can a guy and a girl just talk without having any kind of attraction, to get to know someone so well that
you have a delayed reaction of smitten?
|
|
|
How do you know what a guy is thinking unless you..ask him, which I am way to shy to do at the minute.
Maybe the day he leaves, then it doesn't matter, because if it goes pear shaped I'll never see him again.
But is it just mean to do that to someone? To accidentally force them into an ultimatum?
I'm so confused.

Things to do before your thirty? Get hung on a guy you can't have.

Articles - Made In Hull - Part Two - Our Terrace By Maurice Fairfield
|
|
Ours was the typical terrace. Some had houses with small front gardens and a path down the middle to each front door.
Not so Alex Avenue; a short dead-end courtyard with seven houses on each side.
Foot traffic only, in fact the head of the terrace was enclosed by a hoop topped iron fence with a gate

Articles - A Secret Revealed - The Hutt Street Party! 18th April 2004 By Rich Mills
|
|
For many years I had heard of the myth of the Hutt Street Party.
Spoke in whispers across the Avenues enclave for years, many had heard of it, quite a few had been to one, but still many it seems are in the dark.
Basically it goes like this.. By word of mouth you get to hear about the party, which goes on in the house on Hutt Street. Hence the name!

My story begins in Arundel Street and wanders away to the shallow end of Holderness Road next door to the tram sheds and opposite the old Astoria Cinema, which was at that time the New Astoria Cinema.
Then to Hedon for a time, then back to Arundel a couple of years before the outbreak of the war.

Articles - Speed Dating By Ash Jamieson
|
|
I've seen it. I've peeked down the rabbit's hole.
A large group of people all looking for love in a pub on White Friar Gate. Great to watch, daunting to be a part of but on the whole, good fun all round.
Speed dating, for those that have never witnessed the phenomena, is exactly what it sounds like.
Dating at speed. A group of people split down

Articles - The Oscars 2004 By Steve Rudd
|
|
The highlight of Hollywood's calendar, The Oscars seem to come around faster every year.
Our man in LA to report back to Britain on proceedings was Film 2004 face Jonathan Ross who didn't do a bad job at all, but seemed hampered by his panel of three accompanying guests in the form of Welsh (supposed) funnyman
Rob Brydon, and the impersonating duo of Ronni

Articles - If You Tolerate This, Your Children Will Be Next
(How Hull helped the children of Spain.) By Rich Mills
|
|
In May 1937 the Spanish liner Habana left Bilbao in Spain, on-board were 4,200 Basque children being brought to the safety of the UK.
The Spanish Civil War had started on July 17th 1936, and the world stood by and watched in horror as innocents were slaughtered.
Some however took it upon themselves to do something about the blood-shed.

Articles - Pregnancy - Revisited by Nicholas Boldock

|
Life - it's a funny old game. Love, loss, rejection, success, pride, humility, happiness, sorrow - all part and parcel of the old cradle-to-grave board game. Personally, my life has taken a turn for the "bloody hectic" over the last week or so. And I think I now have an idea what this funny old game is all about.
Those of you who are lucky enough to have no problems with short..

Articles - Hull, Hell And Incidents, Deliver Us. By Patrick Henry
|
|
My arrival in Scarborough at the age of zero happened only months after my folks moved here from the Hull area, so that their voices and views impressed me stronger than those in my birthplace.
Mother said Hullers look down or up to nobody, but Scarborians look always over their shoulder jealous of anyone having more than deserved, or more than grabbed by themselves.

Articles - A Woman in Chains.
|
|
I am, I suppose, a woman in chains. In this extremely bizarre world we try to live in, I will always be linked to my past....
15 years ago I was involved in a crime, something I did because I was young, unguided and naïve.
I lost more than my freedom as if that wasn't enough; I lost my children, my home, my family and most of my friends.
