My Special Memory
By John Firth

I saw your stories on the site and it brought back so many memories of me home town Hull.

I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana now and haven't been home for 15 years but I still have me Hessle Road accent and attitude well intact.

My grandma owned a fish shop on Redbourne Street and as a little lad I used to sit by me mam as she served fish and chips to the locals.
One night four young men came in laughing and joking for some fish and chips.

Me mam told me they were famous and I shook each of their hands.

Apparently they had been playing music at the ABC theatre.
They were so popular the police snook them out the back door to avoid the fans and escorted them to Gordon Street police station which was right across the street from our shop.

It's a night I'll always remember because that was the night little John Firth, a snotty nosed Hessle Road kid met The Beatles.

Keep up the good work.

Articles - Stranger in a Strange Land By Rich Mills
Concrete kid. That's what I told her I considered myself. Bollocks to the countryside. The fresh air would probably kill me! Urgh and the smell of cow-shit! Ah, how wrong could I have been? We travelled up to the Dales, far up in the north of our great county. A place where they have proper hills like! Not flat-land like 'ere! Dry-stone walls, sheep, Read more...

Articles - Things To Do Before You're 30 By Sarah Tomlinson
They say the first lines are always the hardest to write. I suppose they're not wrong. It took ages to think that up. I'm Sarah, 18 years old and born and bred in Hull, or as the locals call it 'ull. Hull is supposed to be the bog hole at the end of the M1. I disagree. Hull is a place where you can do almost anything you want, within the law Read more...

Articles - Made In Hull - Part Two - Our Terrace
By Maurice Fairfield
Ours was the typical terrace. Some had houses with small front gardens and a path down the middle to each front door. Not so Alex Avenue; a short dead-end courtyard with seven houses on each side. Foot traffic only, in fact the head of the terrace was enclosed by a hoop topped iron fence with a gate Read more...

Articles - A Secret Revealed - The Hutt Street Party!
18th April 2004 By Rich Mills
For many years I had heard of the myth of the Hutt Street Party. Spoke in whispers across the Avenues enclave for years, many had heard of it, quite a few had been to one, but still many it seems are in the dark. Basically it goes like this.. By word of mouth you get to hear about the party, which goes on in the house on Hutt Street. Hence the name! Read more...

I have just watched Death On Camera, the BBC documentary about Christopher Alder, who died in police custody in Hull in 1998. If you missed the programme and don't already know the case, here are the facts: Christopher Alder was in Waterfront Nightclub on the night of April 1st, 1998. My story begins in Arundel Street and wanders away to the shallow end of Holderness Road next door to the tram sheds and opposite the old Astoria Cinema, which was at that time the New Astoria Cinema. Articles - Speed Dating By Ash Jamieson
I've seen it. I've peeked down the rabbit's hole. A large group of people all looking for love in a pub on White Friar Gate. Great to watch, daunting to be a part of but on the whole, good fun all round. Speed dating, for those that have never witnessed the phenomena, is exactly what it sounds like. Dating at speed. A group of people split down Read more...

Articles - The Oscars 2004 By Steve Rudd
The highlight of Hollywood's calendar, The Oscars seem to come around faster every year. Our man in LA to report back to Britain on proceedings was Film 2004 face Jonathan Ross who didn't do a bad job at all, but seemed hampered by his panel of three accompanying guests in the form of Welsh (supposed) funnyman Rob Brydon, and the impersonating duo of Ronni Read more...

It may not be the actual World Book Day 2004 until the 4th of March, and the 100th anniversary of Dr. Seuss being born on the 2nd of March, but Lifelong Learning at the city council held an event at the Ferens Art Gallery on this Saturday. Articles - If You Tolerate This, Your Children Will Be Next
(How Hull helped the children of Spain.) By Rich Mills
In May 1937 the Spanish liner Habana left Bilbao in Spain, on-board were 4,200 Basque children being brought to the safety of the UK. The Spanish Civil War had started on July 17th 1936, and the world stood by and watched in horror as innocents were slaughtered.
