Hull Fair Forever
By Diane
It's that time of year again when you look up at the sky and wonder how long it will be before the downpour of rain will come, falling like cats and dogs upon our heads and on our biggest delight ..….. HULL FAIR! It never fails to come and I'll never know why.

I have a couple of Hull Fair memories which I shall never forget....
When us kids were very young and we could not sleep at the thought that the traveling wonder was arriving tomorrow in our town, my dad would shout upstairs (numerous times) 'If you don't go to sleep, the gypsies from the fair will take you away!'. And we would lie there in the stillness of the night hoping they would ..

So the Big night came and the rain, of course and we would skip excitedly ahead hoping to get a glimpse of the brightly lit BIG WHEEL shining high in the sky. It is all so fantastic in a childs eyes.
Dad brought us off our planet and quickly announced we were to play a game. I can see my sister now getting a clip around the ear for saying 'NOT NOW DAD!'. He said to enjoy yourself to the full at a place like this we had to wait outside the ride, OUTER LIMITS where people were thrown out of a very large mouth shrieking with laughter and collect the money they lost from their pockets. Then off to the AMERICAN BIG WHEEL, the biggest earner of the lot! 'Pennies from Heaven', dad would say and my sis got clip number 2. It rained money alright and we just thought 'We're just kids, what the heck… Our dad was a right pain at Hull fair and we couldn't wait to grow up and go without him! My sis has still not forgiven him for the next trick he pulled.
Back in those in those days (before animal rights and all that) you were able to win a fish in a polythene bag. Even if you lost on the coconut shie, hook a duck or darts you won a blooming gold fish! Well, in my dad's pocket lives a hell of a friend called Bert - his catapult. Oh yes, the mad man slyly took it out and fired it at little Jimmy's fish.
All hell broke loose - water everywhere and crowds all gathering. Boy, it was time to go- sister crying, dad having a laugh and little old me tucking into the biggest bag of candy floss you ever saw!

.... In the Hullywood Oscars my vote would go to the BIG WHEEL, the biggest money spinner at the fair!

Articles - Is Hull really No.1 Crap Town?
By Jane Foster
As you may have seen in the media, Hull has been voted top of the list of the 50 crappest towns to live in, within the UK.
If I may point out from the beginning, without being pedantic, that Hull is not a town but a city - therefore it is not eligible for this title anyway. But for the sake of argument I'll carry on.

Reviews, Theatre - Emily Brontė's Wuthering Heights
Adapted by John Godber, Hull Truck Theatre 09/10/03
By E.M.X. Creek
I went to this production with some apprehension. I am not a huge Brontė fan, and in addition had some doubts as to how well Wuthering Heights would adapt for our modest location. I am happy to say that the result was remarkably good.

Articles Part Four - 1973: Super tug to defend fishing fleet
By John Boldock
A few weeks at sea now and really settling down to a routine, if only a boring one! When action is scarce it becomes a case of simply steaming up and down around a pack of several trawlers and keeping an eye out for the Icelanders.

People - Franks first night at Glastonbury Festival
by Alfred Lawyer
It all seemed to be looking up for Frank Malarky, Dance DJ extraordinaire and full-time Law Man - loved by the masses if only they had heard of him. At last a chance to strut his stuff, shake his (ample) booty and impress the young ladies at the festival he loved the most; Glastonbury.

Music Reviews - Sidewinder Saturday 27th September, Silhouette Club by Albert Dukes.
Where many local bands are poor copies of national trends, Sidewinder don't fit neatly to a single comparison, unlike say, The Paddingtons, who clearly want to BE the Libertines (sort it out lads, it's like a tribute) and Turismo, who want to be The Coral, Favours, who want to be the Yeah, Yeah Yeahs (admittedly with a bass player). Sidewinder sound like everything and nothing. Read more...

Drink in the pub,
drink like a fool.
Drink while you're dancing,
drink when you're stoned.

Music Reviews - Pave Perform at the Welly Club
Pave’s performance is polished. Considering the band only formed in March this year, I was staggered to see how much they’d got their act together! Such a tight, professional band. I felt reassured when I took a look at their biographies. That’s when it all fell into place.

Holidays - Simple Holiday Pleasures by Mike
The time was 7.30 am and I was already awake. Liz stirred as I crept out of the caravan without waking Alex and Anna. From our elevated position overlooking the bay, the Med looked as calm as a millpond. The panoramic view was stunning as usual. Read more...
