Crap town? Hull is a City
by Burt Svinansplann

The snobbish criticisms levelled against the city of Hull in its status as the UK's number one "Crap Town" focus on the effects of its poverty.

This poverty, and its social and cultural signifiers, is the result of years of political mismanagement at both a local and national level.

The men who have been chosen to represent the city's interests over the years have represented only their own.

This has led to the erosion of the social, cultural and economic fabric of the place.

Ask the fishermen who lost their livelihoods as a result of Ted Heath's policies on fishing rights.

Ask the Audit Commission who found that the Hull Council's performance is among the very worst in the UK.

Hull doesn't find itself in this condition by accident, we've got the well-paid men in the chambers and the Commons to thank.

So why stay here? Personal reasons: I am proud to call Hull home because the low buildings and wide streets mean Hull has some of the best sky views of any city in the country.

We've got two rivers, and one of them is wider than the Damascus, the Ganges, the Euphrates, or the Nile.

Finally, I've lived in the London suburbs - where most Londoners exist - and I'd take the all-too-human community of HU5 over the lonely desolation of suburban commuter ennui any day of the week.

I've left the city before, and I may leave again, but until then I'm happy to stay here and relish the disappointed beauty that inspired Larkin to write the finest poetry of the 20th century.

Articles - Me and Bobby D
By Lee Cassanell
I know for a fact, that November 17th 2003 will be the greatest day of my life so far.
On that day in a little over a month from now, I will be in the presence of my inspiration, my hero, and the one person who has had more influence on me then any other.

Last week's match between England and Turkey was one of the most crucial and pivotal sporting events this country has been involved in for quite some time (probably since THAT World Cup game against Brazil, in fact).

It's that time of year again when you look up at the sky and wonder how long it will be before the downpour of rain will come, falling like cats and dogs upon our heads and on our biggest delight ..….. HULL FAIR! It never fails to come and I'll never know why.

Articles - Memory of Hull by Steve
My name is Steve and I would like to add my own very brief but personal memories of your lovely town of Hull.
It all started with a magical night club meeting with a very special lady who lived in Hull, but who was visiting a friend in my home town of Bolton.

Fiction - Telling Lies by Nicholas Boldock
At half past five Harry arranged all the papers on his desk into neat piles, as he always did before going home. He shoved his pens into the blue plastic desk tidy and shut down his PC. He performed this same ritual every evening, did it automatically, even unconsciously. He felt overjoyed to be finally going home - the days seemed to be getting longer and longer and longer - even though home, to Harry, was only marginally more bearable than work. Read more...

Holidays - Simple Holiday Pleasures by Mike
The time was 7.30 am and I was already awake. Liz stirred as I crept out of the caravan without waking Alex and Anna. From our elevated position overlooking the bay, the Med looked as calm as a millpond. The panoramic view was stunning as usual. Read more...

Music Reviews - Turismo, Hull Adelphi, 29th September by Albert Dukes.
Being a member of Turismo must make for a busy life; What with running what is easily the best looking and informative website of Hull's bands, giving seemingly endless interviews and press releases to the Hull Daily Mail - they're also the most written about band in the locality, too. Add to that the fact that they've recently lost a guitarist/vocalist and have introduced a fair bit of new material in their live set Read more...

Articles - Is Hull really No.1 Crap Town?
By Jane Foster
As you may have seen in the media, Hull has been voted top of the list of the 50 crappest towns to live in, within the UK.
If I may point out from the beginning, without being pedantic, that Hull is not a town but a city - therefore it is not eligible for this title anyway. But for the sake of argument I'll carry on.

Reviews, Theatre - Emily Brontė's Wuthering Heights
Adapted by John Godber, Hull Truck Theatre 09/10/03
By E.M.X. Creek
I went to this production with some apprehension. I am not a huge Brontė fan, and in addition had some doubts as to how well Wuthering Heights would adapt for our modest location. I am happy to say that the result was remarkably good.
