So   East Hull. Is it all leafy parks and famous politicians? Well, no. Where East Hull falls down in comparison with the West side of the city, is in its cultural mix. It doesn't have one. When I first left Hull to go to University in Liverpool (an ill-fated decision if ever there was one), I was astounded by the diversity of that city. West Indians, Asians, Chinese   all kinds of different people, some born in Britain, some not, but all living together in one place.

It was an eye-opener. West Hull - particularly the Spring Bank / Avenues area, has a similar mix of cultures, and it is one which I find exhilarating and most definitely beneficial to the community. I am delighted to say that my children will be brought up in an area where they can learn from different cultures and be open to new experiences.

In Bilton Grange, we didn't have this. Of course, East Hull in itself is not to blame for this lack of diversity - there are complicated socio-economic reasons which are too complex to go into here. And, of course, everyone's outlook on life is different. Some people adore East Hull and wouldn't dream of living anywhere else, and full respect to them. But for me   it just doesn't do it. Not anymore. I still go back there regularly. My Mum, as I said, lives in Longhill, and my in-laws are based off Holderness Road, so I can often be found in my old stomping-ground. It's nice to go back, as a visitor. I have great memories of my East Hull childhood which I wouldn't trade for anything, but since discovering West Hull, where my rebellious, ever-so-slightly Bohemian nature has found a more comfortable home, I could never live on the other side of the river again. Take a walk round East Park this summer. Get soaked on the Splash Boat. Go and see Hull KR (someone's got to). Hop on a ferry and do a Dutch Dash. Go for a meal in the Apollo or the Royal Charter. Throw stones at John Prescott's house. See East Hull, at least once, because it is as much a part of our great city as anywhere else. Just remember, it's nice, sometimes, but it isn't perfect.
