World Book Day 2004 Event Review By Rich Mills

It may not be the actual World Book Day 2004 until the 4th of March, and the 100th anniversary of Dr. Seuss being born on the 2nd of March, but Lifelong Learning at the city council held an event at the Ferens Art Gallery on this Saturday. The event which lasted from 10:00am until 3:00pm, was a day of workshops and great fun for the children and adults alike.

With poetry from the poet Bernard Young to start the day, we soon got down to various workshops. These included developing poetry, illustrations and story writing. With lunch provided the day progressed with readings from writer Susan Price, and story telling by the good people at Avenues and Newland SureStart.

Children of all ages remained enthralled by the day's activities held in the Live Art Space of the gallery. As were many of the parents who took an active role in the workshops, along with their children. The high-light of my day being witness to my daughter standing in front of a group of her peers, both other children and adult poets, as she read out one of her own compositions.

A big congratulations to all those involved organising the event, which I feel was on of the best events of this kind I have ever participated in the city. More please! Everyone should be encouraged not only to read, but also to write, and express themselves through their writing. Whether it be a small and delicate haiku to an epic novel there is space for all of us, whatever our talents, in the great world of writing.
