Blood On The Streets, Blood On Our Hands
By Rich Mills

This is an after thought, an addition to the previous piece. An after thought! That is a problem some of my friends are having at the moment. And somewhere out there in Hull, there are some people with thoughts of what they have done weighing heavily on their consciences, or so I hope.
Wednesday night (July 23rd), while I was sat writing the first article on refugees and asylum seekers in Hull, the inevitable was happening in the town centre. For years I've predicted it, but hoped that the people of this city would prove me wrong. A man died for me to prove my instincts to be right! As some time after 1.30am of the Thursday the Police were informed of a man collapsed in the doorway of Hammonds. The man thought to have been East African in origin, had been seen in the Retro Bar earlier that night. And this is where the personal connection comes in!
My partner and friends of ours were in Retro Bar that night. In fact they mentioned seeing this man, stood on his own, minding his own business. They mentioned how lonely he had looked, and how they wished they had approached him and maybe engaged him in conversation. All of us have been active in at some time in welcoming the new visitors to this city, simply as volunteers in our own community. Then the next day to find out that this man, the same one they had mentioned the night previous, had died! Shocked and stunned by the news, a phone call to the police followed to help piece together what may have happened to this poor unfortunate man. A man who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I bet when he left which ever country he originated from, that is exactly what he was trying to avoid. Coming to the safety of this country, and this city in particular, should have increased his chances of living a good and productive life. Sadly that was not to be the case. He is now a statistic, another one to add to all the other bad statistics about Hull.

Over the last few days we have had riots in the city, running battles between ignorant white youth and equally ignorant refugees. We have finally entered the 'Summer Of Madness', which can only lead to more damage being done to our city and its already dodgy reputation. I fear the worst, that things will get worse before getting better. However all is not lost, and currently there is a move among the more accepting members of our community to make a stand against this madness. But more on that as it happens, I will keep you informed! Seeing how the Hull Daily Mail has a policy of keeping a lid on such things, it appears that here will be the place where you will be given the truth about the dire situation that we all as citizens of this city must face up to, and are responsible for.
One day I'm going to make a list A 'Top 10' list of all the bad stuff about his city All the myths and truths, such as teen pregnancy statistics, crimes levels, huge council estates You know all those facts we all use when you mention Hull being top in something, or worst should I say Why not email me with your myths and truths about Hull, I'll compile them into a 'Top 10' list for the site.

Music Reviews - A Champion Night - Welly Club 16th January By Cilla and Greg
|
|
One cold night in January (actually it was bloody freezing) my mate Greg and I went along to the Welly for a night with Champion Sound, the Reggae and Dancehall magicians who are currently gracing the Hull night club scene with their individual and blistering repertoire.
We arrived early - about 10.15 and the club had a cold feel.
There was a steady trickle of people arriving and after an hour or so, so the music began to build ..

Humour - Is it All Over for the Personal Ads? by Jane Foster
|
|
At one time, joining a dating agency or putting a personal ad in the paper was seen as the mark of desperation.
If anyone did do it, they seldom admitted it - unless they actually ended up meeting someone and staying with them. Then the details of how they met might leak out slowly..
But technology has changed the way people meet and interact, and one of the most common pastimes is..

(Diversity In The City Of Hull)
By Rich Mills
When I started thinking about this piece, I was originally just going to write about the evening out I had on Saturday (July 19th). I and others around me experienced the cultural diversity that Hull has to offer. A Zulu wedding, a Salsa Night in aid of Deaf Children, Déjà Vu at The Welly, my diverse bunch of mates.
