Part Three - Diaries From Detox

Part One - Alcohol Awareness.
Part Two - Diaries From Detox.

Day 5
A relatively good day, although emotions still very up and down. Doctors round was first. He appeared more concerned about the score between England and the West Indies than poor old Kevin who was suffering from fairly severe withdrawal symptoms - but let's get our priorities right!

In the gym again where for a good reason I was pouring with sweat. Exercise is definitely an absolute tonic.

We had a temporary 'babysitter' over lunchtime .. none of us had ever met her before but one by one we were sobbing and telling her all our problems whilst she was trying to read 'Take A Break'. I think she thought she'd come to the nut ward. It's like a domino effect - one of us feels crap and it ricochets onto the others.

However, the afternoon perked up with the arrival of my best friend. We basked in the sun and laughed. It was a good feeling. Sometimes I almost feel at peace. I am ready and willing to embrace a life change.

6.00 pm I have just had 15mg of Librium. Because the alcohol is out of my system I no longer need these quantities of Librium. I feel as if I have been hit over the head with a large frying pan. I am practically catatonic. I can hardly remember my name. I am exhausted.

Day 6

8.10am A full 7 hours sleep! No bad dreams, no racing heart and I feel refreshed and OPTIMISTIC! However my mouth aches and I have a cold. I have a theory .. when I was drinking I was never ill. I put this down to the fact that alcohol is like Domestos and kills all known germs. Now I'm off it, my body's falling apart. Another theory I have is that Glen, Kevin and I are all part of a secret government experiment (no, I haven't gone mad).

At this stage during my last attempt at detox (a year ago) I felt fairly normal. This time I'm walking round like a zombie, Kev's motor co-ordination is completely out to lunch and Glen's just barking anyway. We're all turning into Jack Nicholson while Nurse Ratchett hands out our medication. We'll soon be having piped music on the ward and the offer of frontal lobotomies.

We had a rip-roaring laugh in the garden this morning - all of us being in good spirits (maybe the wrong word to use!). Its rather like being in the Big Brother household. One of us elected to go and ask the powers that be for our supplies. Our challenge is to remain sane.

Quote of the day from Kev: 'It's not as if we're mad or unfit members of the community' - I told him 'You're absolutely right and that's why we're surrounded by 10ft bloody walls, barbed wire and practically machine gun nests!

PM. Crash. Kev and Glens liver test results were upsetting. We were all on a downer. I'm waiting for mine. I'm worried. My keyworker came in and as usual was her fantastically positive self. I cannot praise her too highly.

I'm overwrought, tired and weepy.

Interviews - Robert Needham Sculptor
That's when I met Robert Needham. My first impression was that maybe he was a member of the clergy, presenting me with a warm smile and outstretched hand, smartly dressed, little thin maybe, definitely an interesting looking character.
