Part Two - Where Are All Our Mothers: - Adopted in Hull
By Diane
Prev
Part One.
One day, a very strange thing happened. Almost an answer to my prayers. I was listening to a programme on radio Humberside about what to do and where to go if you need some answers to your questions if you are adopted.
At this point my adoptive mother had died, so I felt more like I could do this and spare her feelings. Adopted children feel such strong responsibilities towards their rearing loved ones. In those days you had to seek out a counsellor to talk you through the procedure and also go digging around for information that was long time buried.
I always will remember how really nervous I felt and at any moment I would run out, with my hands over my ears, shouting 'I DON'T WANT TO KNOW!
What he told me made me weep for days - he told me my real name. It isn't until that very moment that all of it becomes very real indeed. My whole identity had vanished completely. He also told me my birth mother's name, who sadly had died (strangely enough) the same year as my other mum. He also said I had 2 sisters and 1 brother. He said it was not up to me to find them as they probably wouldn't know that I existed.
So off I went absolutely dazed and confused and still in a no-name land. He never contacted me again and I was glad in a funny sort of way because at that moment in time I couldn't take any more.
As the years went by I still found it difficult to accept that I was called something else. Then, out of the blue, I found someone who wanted to listen. By this time my beautiful father had died and I had a family of my own. This person encouraged me to take my information further and to find my true blood so I would have a proper family tree to offer to my kids and at last I could feel complete.
I got on to it step by step and ended up in a place run by the social services called Gleneagles in Hull. They were very helpful and kind, they gave me a wad of documents that made me smile, I felt at last I was getting somewhere and maybe I was old enough to handle all this now.
Inside this mass of papers were many unanswered questions that completely amazed me. My mother sounded lovely and it wasn't that she didn't want me as I had dreaded, but her circumstances in those awful sixties did so prevent her from keeping me.
She did love me and I know she thought of me because before she let me go into another mothers arms she gave me something so very precious for the rest of my life; MY NAME.

After visiting thisisUll.com My only visit to Hull was with a house-mate while at college - taking in the Hull fair and riding a couple of the rides. The 'Enterprise ' and a loop the loop one I seem to recall after a few of the amber nectars many moons ago. I was interested in the article 'Diary from a detox'.

Articles - Is Hull really No.1 Crap Town?
By Jane Foster
As you may have seen in the media, Hull has been voted top of the list of the 50 crappest towns to live in, within the UK.
If I may point out from the beginning, without being pedantic, that Hull is not a town but a city - therefore it is not eligible for this title anyway. But for the sake of argument I'll carry on.

Articles - My Youth Days at Hull Fair by Barry Sleight

Hull Fair has always played an important role in my life. As a kid we all went to the fair as one big family. My Grandad and Granny came with us as did many of my cousins. I remember how exciting it used to be as you got nearer and could see the lights and smell popcorn and hotdogs and hear the music.
