Part One - Where Are All Our Mothers: - Adopted in Hull
By Diane
Part Two.
Part Three.
Part Four.

I was 10 years old. I was playing in the street with my friend. Just the usual hopscotch and skipping games - nothing out of the ordinary, unaware that this ordinary day was to change my life forever …
This young friend told me that my mam and dad were not my real parents and that the truth of it was that I was adopted. My head was racing, my stomach was turning and for goodness sake what did the word adopted mean any way? Whatever it meant, I knew it felt like a bad thing and not something good at all. I felt so alone and did not know what to do or where to go with this lie or truthful story that her mother told her in confidence.

As the years went by, I'd always look into the mirror and wonder 'Who made me? Where do I come from? Whose eyes are these and most of all, who do I look like?'. I wondered through life with a piece of me missing like the last bit of a jig saw puzzle.
Then it was 'Why me? I just want to be normal. I just want to be able to say I was born at a certain time, at a certain place and that I weighed in at a certain weight'. But I had no information at all about my origins. I felt so alone and a little afraid now.

Perhaps there are others just like me out there, starting to wonder if people can arrive on this planet for no other reason than to simply exist and belong to no-one and come from no-one. I

It's time to save my sanity and seek out the path that will lead me to someone else's world - a world in which I once belonged even if it was for such a short time. All the time I am shaking inside because I fear that I was or am some one's terrible secret.

(Diversity In The City Of Hull)
By Rich Mills
When I started thinking about this piece, I was originally just going to write about the evening out I had on Saturday (July 19th). I and others around me experienced the cultural diversity that Hull has to offer. A Zulu wedding, a Salsa Night in aid of Deaf Children, Déjà Vu at The Welly, my diverse bunch of mates.

In late 2001, disillusioned UCATT members in the caravan building industry were looking for another union to represent them, one which would not sell them out in their disputes with their employers.
