Art Gallery By Local Artist Patrick Henry
|
I became a self-taught painter at the age of 36 when living in a mediaeval
village in the French Dordogne.
Post-Impressionism had been my favourite kind of art for long before that.
I think it has a basic relevance that will never be exhausted.
Renaissance paintings are also very valuable to us in this plastic media age where
the concentration on vivacity of real presence is much occluded.
Surrealism and Abstract Impressionism should also be a continual influence, making
us fortunate to have such wealth of recent examples.
Current Conceptual Art may be brilliant but is an entirely different activity.
The act of painting has no comparison or substitution.
It is a road towards mystery, enlightenment and self-discovery, the way travellers reach far lands.
|
|
|
When making paintings of countries visited in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas,
Australia, I unfolded a particular sense of these places, tangible as the scent
and texture of pigment that serves to mould fresh partial versions of ancient actual landscapes.
I never yet painted England which lacks the light, colour, shape, tribalism and
philosophies I feel needed on the palette.
|
|
If I were more capable I would deal with these problems and go ahead.

|
|
On 21st August 2004 I took to the rails at 5.30am bound for Hull. The reason?
Elvington Yorkshire Airshow. Traveling with anticipation of how the day was going
to unfold; my last experience being sat in the pouring rain at Waddington,
I thought what aircraft I was going to see, a Harrier? Tornado? Spitfire?
