Aircraft and Airshows |
|
 |
|
The Hawk, built at Brough, is the mount of the Red Arrows.
Again The Reds with a nine ship formation thrilled the crowd with the perfect
display, as they have since way back in 1965.
Not always in the same aircraft type but always with the same result; an
extravaganza of slick movement and interchanging patters that brought
excited applause from the 2,000+ crowd.
|
|
|
Settle down now, let's look around the site, get a burger and chips,
there's plenty of choice here.
How about a dough nut and cup of tea, three sugars, please.
Lots of stalls selling gifts and mementos, plenty to amuse the kids too
but you must have enough spending money.
|
Back to the display by the Hunter and Harrier.
The Hunter was without doubt the most successful post-war British fighter
and on of the most versatile, confirming the old adage If it looks right, it flies right.
This is Elvington's very own aircraft and flown today by Squadron Leader Chris Heames.
|
|
|
The Harrier is a very different beast, the first flying in 1966 and still
the world's only operational Vertical/Short take off and landing combat aircraft;
The Yanks love it.
The aircraft was blooded in the 1982 conflict with Argentina, being a vital
element in the Falklands victory.
|
The Pilot today was Flight Lieutenant C Rogers from RAF Wittering, who did
justice to an outstanding aircraft, with hover and bow; it never fails to thrill the crowd.
The Royal Navy Historic Flight showed us the Sea Fury, this being the
Fleet Air Arms last front line piston engined fighter.
And then the Sea Hawk produced in 1953 and one of the most attractive of early jet fighters.
|
|
|
Now bring on the girls - twins, in fact. Introducing Poppy and Libby Dover,
two beautiful and smart 19 year olds with engaging personalities and daring nerve.
These are the wing walkers in the Utterly Butterly team that evoke the dare devil
atmosphere of the roaring 20's.
|
The aircraft are Boeing Super Stearman's, an old American trainer aircraft and
are flown by Mike Dentith and Martyn Carrington with smoothness and precision.
We loved your performance.
Next, the big noise of the fast modern jets, the Tornado GR4 fitted with two
Rolls Royce RB199 engines, capable of taking the aircraft to twice the speed of sound.
Flight Lieutenant Pete Griffiths was the pilot with navigator Matt Bressani.
|
|
|
We got plenty of noise and vibration in the air that tells you this is raw power
with a lot of punch.
Only complaint was from the many car owners having their car alarms bleeping madly.
Not to be outdone, the latest aircraft to enter RAF service, the Eurofighter Typhoon
gave us a show to be remembered.
|
This was the aircraft we all were eager to see, it's been a long time in
putting in a n appearance.
First flight in 1994, finally into full RAF service in September 2003, the
display pilot for the 2005 season is Squadron Leader Matt Elliott.
No doubt about it, this was the highlight of the day; powerful, sleek and
very agile, I'm sure this aircraft will go on to be one of the best designs
and please Airshow crowds for many years.
|
|
|
A great Airshow and a credit to the organisers.
Thanks to all, I'll be back for more next year.
What about you, readers? Come and see for yourself.

Aircraft and Airshows - The Yorkshire Airshow - Elvington 2004 By Rachael
|

On 21st August 2004 I took to the rails at 5.30am bound for Hull. The reason?
Elvington Yorkshire Airshow. Traveling with anticipation of how the day was going
to unfold; my last experience being sat in the pouring rain at Waddington,
I thought what aircraft I was going to see, a Harrier? Tornado? Spitfire?

Aircraft and Airshows - The Shuttleworth Collection - Military Pageant Air Display - 1st August 2004 By Tony
|
|
I can only say that this was without doubt one of the most enjoyable events I have visited over the years.
Not so much a flying display as a nostalgic happening.
The mood was set as I arrived to hear 17 members of the James Goff Big Band playing a
selection of tunes from the 1930's

Aircraft and Airshows - Waddington International Airshow - June 26th and 27th 2004 By Tony
|

I travelled to the Airshow with trepidation, as the weather forecast was for cloud and rain
and the prospect of no flying loomed large.
But here we are and all worries regarding the forecast were forgotten as I entered this hive of activity.
As all aircraft/Airshow enthusiasts know, the noise and smell of fuel excites the senses and
one hurries

Aircraft and Airshows - Aircraft Stamps By Tony

By popular request, the ballroom dancer is back! I've been urged by email and phone to give you more aircraft stamps from around the world.
So here is a selection of my favourites which I hope will whet your appetites. I'm hoping that other philatelists will come forward and show us what stamps they are collecting.

Aircraft and Airshows - Philately - Concorde Stamps By Tony
|
|
I'm a philatelist. In these modern times, that's like being a ballroom dancer on a skateboard ramp, a bit embarrassing.
Over the years I've been a collector of aircraft stamps and have now around 4,000 stamps dating from 1922 to the present day.
I've selected some of the stamps featuring Concorde to show the wide range of countries who felt the need to show this fantastic aircraft.

Aircraft and Airshows - Concorde by Tony

On Friday 24th October 2003 the last fight of Concorde by British Airways as a fare paying passenger aircraft took place.
If you have flown on Concorde or have seen it in flight, you can understand what a great loss this will be to the nation. The aircraft, first airborne in 1969, was and is still out in front in design and technical innovation.

Aircraft and Airshows - The Yorkshire Airshow - Elvington 2003 By Tony
|
|
What a pleasure to be here for 2 days (24th - 25th August)! We were fully entertained with a diverse mix of aircraft.
Both days of the flying program opened with the superb Red Arrows. Unfortunately, on the first day they had to abort their display for safety reasons when three light aircraft strayed in to the six mile display zone. Without doubt there must be an investigation into this misdemeanour and culprits brought to book.

Hello, Tony here!
Let's discuss where you can see wonderful old and modern aircraft, maintained and kept flying by a dedicated team of engineers giving many hours of their time for free.
With the decline in the needs of the RAF, closure of airfields in the Yorkshire area has hit us hard.
