Aircraft and Airshows
The Yorkshire Airshow - Elvington 2003
By Tony
What a pleasure to be here for 2 days (24th - 25th August)! We were fully entertained with a diverse mix of aircraft.

Both days of the flying program opened with the superb Red Arrows. Unfortunately, on the first day they had to abort their display for safety reasons when three light aircraft strayed in to the six mile display zone. Without doubt there must be an investigation into this misdemeanour and culprits brought to book.

On with the show and aircraft of the WW2 era we saw the P51 Mustang, Spitfire Mk IX, Mitchell B25 and not forgetting the Battle of Britain Memorial Fight. The Lancaster on this occasion was replaced with that old workhorse the Dakota 3, an able deputy.

Now the jets scene with a nostalgic 50's display by the 'Heritage Pair', a Vampire T55 and Meteor NFII flown by Paul Morris and Dan Griffiths.

The last fighter produced by De Havilland Aviation was the 110, renamed the Sea Vixen for the Navy. In the 60's it brought Navy carrier aircraft its first missile-armed interception, and fitted with Avon 208 engines it could outpace all bombers of the day. This is the only Sea Vixen in the world that is flying, operated by De Havilland Aviation and based at Bournemouth. It is unique.

Credit must be given to energy drinks company Red Bull for their contribution and fantastic paint scheme, giving us such a wonderful spectacle.

The Yorkshire Airshow - Elvington 2003 continued
By Tony
The arrival of the Sepecat Jaguar screaming in at 20ft up the runway shook the air and spectators into paying attention. In Squadron service for 30 years, this up rated aircraft is still playing its part in today's RAF.

The pilot was experienced Flight Lieutenant Mike Hayes of No. 16 (Reserve) Squadron who did an excellent performance. Keeping up the pace, the Panavia Tornado GR4 thundered overhead demonstrating its swing-wing capability. Without doubt a very potent aircraft.

On the lighter side, the 'Aerosuperbatics Ltd' again thrilled us with the 'Utterly Butterly' team performing with the Boeing Stearmans duo, as usual a delightful routine. The wing walking girls must find the excitement of this 4G ride the thrill of a lifetime. If this is a job, what do they do for kicks?

Finally, a mention for Denny Dobson - performing awesome aerobatics in his Extra 300 - truly Britain's ultimate aerobatic pilot.

A great Airshow, don't miss next years show on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd August 2004.

All the best,

Tony.

Music Reviews - The Landau's - Sweet But True
(single/ DAGALOST Records) By Steve Rudd
Hull's something of a hotbed for cool indie-rock bands, and The Landau's - along with Still Life - are one of the freshest bands forging ahead within such a musical genre. An exclusively laddish quartet, this is the young band's first major release, and has been recorded at the city's famous Fairview Studios. The production qualities are fantastic, Read more...

Articles - Hull, Hell And Incidents, Deliver Us.
By Patrick Henry
My arrival in Scarborough at the age of zero happened only months after my folks moved here from the Hull area, so that their voices and views impressed me stronger than those in my birthplace. Mother said Hullers look down or up to nobody, but Scarborians look always over their shoulder jealous of anyone having more than deserved, or more than grabbed by themselves. Read more...

Music Reviews - Pave - Linnet and Lark
05 February 2004 by Nick Quantrill
2004 hasn't been the greatest years so far. It kicked off more than adequately in the Old Town Square of Prague but went rapidly down hill from there. Returning home I battled unsuccessfully against tonsillitis for a couple of weeks before slipping on the ice and breaking two fingers! Almost recovered, I decided to unleash myself upon Hull once again. The return of 'The Sesh' at Linnet and Lark seemed as good any place... Read more...

Music Reviews - Komplikated at theTurnpike
Thursday 5th Feb By Scarrie
This was the first time I'd seen the Hull 5 piece in action but I'd heard good things and I wasn't disappointed. The band certainly aren't lacking in talent, Leah (lead vocals) has a stunning voice complemented by some fine guitar work. The indie/pop rock songs quickly have you tapping your hands, feet (or whatever bodily instrument you choose) and singing along. Read more...

Driving - Jo's DRIVING LESSONS
Here I was living alone with my 3 children, my husband having just left us to cope alone. My eldest daughter, only just 18, was keen to learn to drive and I didn't want to spend a fortune on driving lessons, at least not until she could learn as much as she could from me. Read more...
